Tecno’s 0mm-Bezel Concept Phone Offers a Glimpse of the All-Screen Future

Smartphone design has become increasingly predictable. Most modern devices are built around the same familiar formula: a large rectangular display, a small camera cutout and a cluster of cameras on the back. Manufacturers continue to improve performance and photography, but genuinely noticeable changes to the physical design have become much less common.

Tecno is now attempting to push smartphone design forward with what it calls the Next-Gen Borderless Concept Phone. The prototype features a claimed 0mm display border, creating the appearance of a screen that reaches all the way to the edges of the device. It is scheduled to make its public debut at IFA 2026, which takes place in Berlin from 4 to 8 September.

The Long Pursuit of a Truly Bezel-Less Phone

Smartphone bezels have been shrinking for years. Thick borders once provided space for physical navigation buttons, speakers, cameras and sensors, but improvements in display packaging gradually allowed manufacturers to move those components elsewhere.

Today's flagship phones already have narrow borders, yet a thin black frame remains visible around almost every display. Even when the bezels are symmetrical and only a few millimetres wide, the separation between the screen and chassis is still noticeable.

Tecno claims its concept eliminates that visible border entirely. Rather than merely making the bezel slightly thinner, the company wants the display to appear as though it flows directly into the frame.

The result shown in Tecno's promotional images is certainly striking. Content appears to occupy almost the entire front surface, bringing the industry closer to the all-screen smartphone that manufacturers have been promising for years.

How Tecno Claims to Have Removed the Bezel

Achieving a truly borderless display is more complicated than simply fitting a slightly larger panel into the phone.

The edges of a display normally contain important components and structural materials. These help connect the screen to the device, protect the panel and provide space for display-control electronics. Removing the visible border therefore requires changes to the way the entire phone is constructed.

Tecno says it achieved the 0mm appearance through advanced internal component stacking, structural re-engineering and new screen-packaging techniques. However, the company has not yet provided a detailed technical explanation of how these methods work or how the panel is protected from damage.

Those missing details will be important. A concept can look excellent in carefully produced images, but the real test will be whether the design feels practical when held, carried and used every day.

The Design and Hardware Already Look Impressive

Personally, I think the phone looks fantastic based on the early images. The incredibly thin profile and almost uninterrupted display give it the kind of futuristic appearance that many smartphone concepts promise but rarely deliver.

The hardware presentation also looks surprisingly refined for something described as a prototype. It does not appear to rely on an unusual folding mechanism or an awkward experimental shape. Instead, Tecno has taken the conventional smartphone design and attempted to perfect its most visible component: the screen.

That is what makes the concept so appealing to me. It still looks like a normal phone that could potentially be used every day, but the disappearance of the bezel makes it feel much more advanced.

I cannot wait to see the device go live at IFA and appear in real hands rather than only promotional images. Once people can examine it from different angles, we should get a much better sense of whether the borderless effect is as impressive in person as it appears in Tecno's renders.

A Familiar Phone with a More Futuristic Front

The concept does not seem to abandon practical smartphone features purely for the sake of appearance.

Based on the images released so far, the device appears to have a slim frame, a USB-C port along the bottom and a coloured button on the side. The front still includes a small punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera, meaning Tecno has not yet produced a completely uninterrupted display.

That camera opening prevents the device from being a literal sheet of screen, but it may be a sensible compromise. Under-display selfie cameras can hide the cutout, yet they often struggle with image clarity because the camera must capture light through the display layer.

For many users, a small punch hole may be preferable to poorer selfie and video-call quality. The real achievement here is not the removal of every visible component but the elimination of the black border surrounding the panel.

The Comparison with the iPhone 17 Pro

Tecno has also shown its concept beside Apple's iPhone 17 Pro to demonstrate the difference in bezel thickness.

The iPhone already has relatively narrow and consistent borders, but Tecno's comparison makes them appear much more noticeable. The concept phone's display seems to extend almost directly to the chassis, producing a cleaner and more expansive front design.

Naturally, a manufacturer-controlled comparison should be treated cautiously. Lighting, viewing angles and promotional rendering can make differences appear more dramatic than they may be during everyday use.

Nevertheless, the comparison effectively communicates Tecno's ambition. The company is not merely trying to match the bezel thickness of current premium phones. It wants to demonstrate what the next stage of conventional smartphone design could look like.

A Larger Display Without a Larger Phone

One of the practical advantages of smaller bezels is the ability to fit a larger screen into a body of roughly the same size.

Instead of making smartphones even wider or taller, manufacturers can increase the usable display area by reducing the space surrounding it. This could make videos, games, documents and websites feel more immersive without making the phone more difficult to hold or carry.

The effect may be particularly noticeable during gaming and video playback, where the display can appear to extend beyond the physical limits of the device. Tecno has specifically highlighted the potential for more immersive entertainment and gaming experiences.

However, the difference in everyday use may be less dramatic than it appears in promotional material. Once bezels become extremely thin, reducing them by another millimetre may improve the appearance more than the actual functionality.

That does not make the achievement meaningless. Smartphone design is partly about how a device feels and looks, and a cleaner front can make the entire product seem more modern.

Accidental Touches Could Become a Problem

A display that extends completely to the edge introduces new usability challenges.

When users hold a phone, parts of their palm and fingers naturally touch its sides. A physical bezel provides a small safe area that can be gripped without interacting with the screen. Removing it could increase accidental taps, unwanted scrolling or unintended gestures.

Tecno will therefore need effective palm-rejection software that can distinguish deliberate input from the normal contact created while holding the device. The touch-sensitive areas near the corners may also require careful calibration.

Cases could create another complication. Most protective cases extend slightly above the display to reduce the risk of scratches and cracks. On a phone with no visible bezel, that raised edge could cover part of the screen or interfere with edge gestures.

These may sound like minor details, but they will determine whether a 0mm-bezel phone is enjoyable to use or merely impressive to look at.

Durability May Be the Bigger Challenge

The borderless design also raises concerns about durability.

Traditional bezels and frames provide a degree of separation between the exposed display panel and the outside world. When the screen reaches the very edge, an impact against the side or corner could transfer more force directly into the panel.

Tecno has not yet explained what protective glass is being used, how the display is mounted or whether the structure can survive the usual drops, pressure and twisting that smartphones experience.

Repairability could become an issue as well. If the display and frame are more tightly integrated, replacing a damaged screen may be more difficult or expensive.

This is one reason concept phones are valuable. They allow manufacturers to demonstrate an idea and gather feedback before committing to mass production. Tecno can use the IFA showcase to determine whether people are genuinely interested in a borderless display and what concerns need to be addressed before commercialisation.

The Specifications Remain a Mystery

Tecno has not disclosed the processor, memory, storage, battery capacity, charging speed or camera hardware for the concept.

The absence of detailed specifications suggests that the display technology is currently the main attraction. It may also indicate that the prototype is intended primarily as a demonstration platform rather than a product that is nearly ready for retail.

The company has not shown much of the rear design either, leaving the camera arrangement and overall appearance of the back largely unknown.

This makes it difficult to judge how complete the device actually is. A polished exterior does not necessarily mean the phone is ready for mass production, regulatory approval or everyday consumer use.

Concept Phones Do Not Always Become Real Products

Technology companies regularly produce concept devices to demonstrate engineering capabilities, attract attention and test possible future designs. Some ideas eventually reach commercial products, while others remain permanently on the exhibition floor.

Tecno itself has experimented with unusually thin phones, modular accessories and complex folding designs. Its latest borderless prototype continues that willingness to explore hardware beyond ordinary annual upgrades.

However, a concept phone does not need to launch exactly as shown to have an impact. Tecno could gradually introduce parts of the technology into future Camon, Pova or Phantom models. A retail phone with extremely thin bezels—rather than a literal 0mm border—could still benefit from the engineering developed for this prototype.

Other manufacturers may also study the design and pursue similar approaches, accelerating the move towards more seamless displays across the wider smartphone industry.

A More Practical Direction Than Curved Displays

The borderless approach could offer a cleaner alternative to the heavily curved screens that became common on premium Android phones several years ago.

Curved displays looked futuristic, but they also introduced reflections, accidental touches, colour distortion and difficulties when applying screen protectors. Many manufacturers have since returned to flatter panels.

Tecno's concept appears to retain a relatively flat front while minimising the surrounding border. That could provide the visual appeal of an edge-to-edge screen without introducing the same usability problems associated with aggressive curves.

Of course, that will depend on the final construction. A completely exposed edge may create its own durability and touch-input concerns, but the underlying direction feels more practical than bending the display simply for visual effect.

Will It Ever Become a Commercial Phone?

The biggest unanswered question is whether Tecno can manufacture this design reliably and affordably.

Producing one working prototype is very different from manufacturing thousands or millions of identical units. Display yields, structural strength, waterproofing, repair costs and quality control could all make a true 0mm-bezel phone expensive.

Tecno may also decide that the engineering required does not provide enough practical benefit to justify the cost. Most consumers are unlikely to replace a phone solely because its borders are one or two millimetres thinner.

Still, ambitious concepts often begin as expensive experiments before gradually becoming normal. Foldable phones, under-display fingerprint sensors and extremely fast charging technologies all spent years in development before reaching ordinary retail devices.

Final Thoughts

Tecno's Next-Gen Borderless Concept Phone is one of the more visually exciting smartphone ideas expected at IFA 2026. Its claimed 0mm display border creates an impressively clean front and shows that manufacturers can still find new ways to improve the traditional smartphone design without relying entirely on folding screens.

Personally, I think both the design and the visible hardware look excellent. The phone appears futuristic without becoming strange or impractical, which is exactly what I would like to see from a next-generation smartphone.

There are still major questions involving durability, accidental touches, cases, repairability and large-scale manufacturing. We also know virtually nothing about its processor, battery, cameras or eventual price.

Even so, I cannot wait to see it go live at IFA and find out whether Tecno's borderless display looks just as impressive outside carefully prepared promotional images. It may remain a concept, but it provides an exciting preview of how close the industry could be to delivering the long-promised all-screen phone.
