Qualcomm Quietly Introduces a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series—and the Naming Is Getting Even More Complicated

Qualcomm's flagship mobile-chip naming system was already difficult enough to follow, but the company has now added another variation to the mix. A newly published product brief confirms the existence of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, V Series, carrying the part number SM8850-1-AB.

Rather than receiving a major announcement of its own, the V Series appeared quietly alongside the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 documentation on Qualcomm's website. At first glance, it offers many of the same flagship capabilities, including Oryon CPU cores, advanced on-device AI, premium camera processing and the same high-end connectivity platform. The most notable reductions appear within the Adreno graphics subsystem.

Another Snapdragon Name to Remember

Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as the fifth generation of its premium 8-series platform since adopting its newer single-digit branding system. The company reserves the "Elite" label for its highest-performance mobile products, while other premium chips sit beneath it under names such as Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

The new V Series adds another layer to that hierarchy.

Its complete name is Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, V Series, which makes it sound like a specialist branch of the same flagship family rather than an entirely separate chipset. Qualcomm's product page lists it alongside the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 instead of presenting it as a lower 8-series product.

That distinction matters. This does not appear to be a replacement for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 or a renamed mid-range processor. It remains part of the Elite family, but with a different internal configuration.

The V Series Uses the SM8850-1-AB Model Number

The standard product brief identifies the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as SM8850-5-AC, while the V Series carries the identifier SM8850-1-AB.

Both products use Qualcomm's 3nm manufacturing process and support LPDDR5X memory at up to 5,300MHz, UFS 4.1 storage and Quick Charge 5. They also share much of the same platform architecture, meaning smartphone manufacturers should still receive most of the headline features associated with Qualcomm's current flagship generation.

The differences become more apparent when looking at the CPU and GPU sections of the two official product briefs.

The V Series Is Not Simply Weaker in Every Area

Calling the V Series a straightforward cut-down version may not tell the entire story.

Qualcomm's V Series documentation lists an eight-core Oryon CPU containing two Prime cores at up to 4.6GHz and six Performance cores at up to 3.62GHz. The SM8850-5-AC product brief, meanwhile, lists two Prime cores and five Performance cores, producing a seven-core configuration.

Qualcomm's main product page also notes that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform is available in different versions, including a 4.6GHz CPU model and a seven-core CPU option. Smartphone specifications can therefore vary according to the exact platform selected by the manufacturer.

Based on the published specifications, the V Series should not automatically be viewed as an inferior CPU model. Its most obvious compromise instead appears to be in graphics performance.

The Biggest Reduction Is in the Adreno GPU

The V Series product brief explicitly lists an Adreno GPU with two slices operating at 1.2GHz. Qualcomm also provides it with 12MB of Adreno High Performance Memory, or HPM.

By comparison, the regular SM8850-5-AC platform includes 18MB of Adreno HPM. Qualcomm does not identify the number of GPU slices in that particular product brief, but the larger cache allocation points towards a more substantial graphics configuration.

HPM is dedicated high-speed memory located close to the GPU. It is designed to reduce the need to repeatedly reach into slower system memory, helping the graphics processor operate more efficiently during demanding workloads.

Reducing HPM from 18MB to 12MB gives the V Series less local graphics memory to work with. Combined with the confirmed two-slice GPU configuration, that will likely reduce peak gaming and graphics performance compared with the strongest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variants.

Gaming Is Where the Difference May Be Most Visible

For everyday activities such as browsing, messaging, photography and application switching, users may struggle to notice a major difference between the V Series and other Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 versions.

Heavy gaming is more likely to expose the gap.

Fewer GPU resources could affect sustained frame rates in demanding games, particularly at high resolutions or with advanced effects enabled. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing, complex lighting and large textures place substantially more pressure on the GPU than ordinary Android applications.

The V Series still retains Qualcomm's major gaming technologies, including Tile Memory Heap, Mesh Shading, Unreal Engine 5 optimisations, Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2.0, Adreno Frame Motion Engine 3.0 and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

In other words, the features remain present. The main question is how quickly the reduced GPU configuration can process them.

A Smaller GPU Could Also Bring Practical Benefits

Lower graphics performance is not necessarily a disadvantage in every smartphone.

A smaller GPU may consume less power and generate less heat, especially when manufacturers tune the chipset conservatively. This could make the V Series attractive for thinner devices, compact flagships or phones where battery life matters more than achieving the highest possible benchmark score.

Smartphone cooling systems vary considerably. A powerful chipset placed inside a thin chassis may quickly reduce its clock speeds to control temperature, while a slightly smaller GPU could sustain a greater percentage of its performance for longer.

The final experience will therefore depend heavily on each manufacturer's cooling design, software optimisation and power limits. Qualcomm itself notes that platform results vary according to the OEM implementation.

A theoretically faster chipset is not always faster after twenty minutes of continuous gaming if it cannot remain cool.

The Same Flagship Oryon CPU Architecture Remains

The V Series continues using Qualcomm's custom Oryon CPU architecture.

Its two Prime cores can reach 4.6GHz, while the six Performance cores operate at up to 3.62GHz. Qualcomm positions the platform for fast application launches, responsive multitasking, gaming and mobile content creation.

This suggests that general CPU performance should remain firmly within flagship territory.

The chipset should still be suitable for demanding multitasking, image processing, video editing and other workloads that rely more heavily on the CPU than the GPU.

It could create an unusual balance in which the V Series offers a full eight-core CPU configuration but a more modest two-slice graphics processor.

AI Capabilities Appear Largely Unchanged

The V Series retains Qualcomm's Hexagon NPU and AI Engine, including support for INT2, INT4, INT8, INT16, FP8 and FP16 precision.

It also supports 64-bit memory virtualisation, model encryption and the upgraded Qualcomm Sensing Hub with dual Micro NPUs and dual always-sensing image signal processors. These components are intended to support on-device generative and agentic AI experiences without sending every request to the cloud.

Qualcomm's Personal Scribe and Personal Knowledge Graph technologies are also included. The company describes these features as enabling assistants that learn from routines, preferences and conversations while processing more information locally on the device.

There is no obvious indication in Qualcomm's public documentation that the V Series receives a weaker NPU.

That could make the chip attractive for manufacturers wanting flagship-level AI features while reducing graphics costs.

Camera Features Remain Surprisingly Complete

The camera subsystem also appears to be largely carried over.

The V Series includes triple 20-bit Spectra AI image signal processors, support for cameras up to 320MP, triple 48MP capture with zero shutter lag and single-camera capture up to 108MP with zero shutter lag.

It also supports 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second, 8K HDR playback at 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Google Ultra HDR and advanced computational video processing.

Advanced Professional Video codec support remains included as well. Qualcomm introduced APV as a high-bitrate recording format intended to give creators more flexibility during professional post-production.

The V Series therefore does not appear to sacrifice the flagship camera pipeline merely to reduce the GPU configuration.

The Same X85 Modem and FastConnect 7900 Are Included

Connectivity remains another strong area.

The chipset uses Qualcomm's X85 5G Modem-RF system, supporting peak theoretical download speeds of up to 12.5Gbps and uploads of up to 3.7Gbps. It also supports 5G Advanced features, mmWave, sub-6GHz connectivity and satellite communication through integrated NB-NTN support.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are handled by the FastConnect 7900 platform, which provides Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, Bluetooth Channel Sounding and integrated Ultra Wideband support.

These specifications are effectively flagship-grade and match the connectivity capabilities offered by the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 documentation.

That reinforces the impression that the V Series is a targeted GPU variation rather than a broad reduction across the entire system-on-chip.

Is the V Series a Binned Chip?

One possibility is that the V Series represents a form of chip binning.

Semiconductor manufacturing does not produce perfectly identical chips. Some units may contain sections that do not meet the highest performance target, even though the rest of the silicon works correctly.

Manufacturers can disable the affected section and sell the chip as another model rather than discarding it. This is common throughout the CPU and GPU industry.

The V Series' two-slice GPU could theoretically allow Qualcomm to use silicon where one graphics section cannot operate at the required standard. It could also be an intentionally designed configuration created to satisfy a particular price, thermal or power target.

Qualcomm has not publicly explained why the V Series exists, so either interpretation remains speculation.

It should not automatically be described as defective or salvaged silicon. Product segmentation is often planned deliberately even when the chips originate from the same underlying design.

It May Fill the Gap Between Premium and Full Flagship Phones

The smartphone market increasingly contains several levels of "flagship" devices.

A manufacturer may offer an Ultra model with the most powerful chipset, large cooling system and highest price. A regular Pro model may use a slightly reduced processor while retaining premium cameras, displays and AI features.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series could fit naturally into that second category.

It would allow manufacturers to advertise the Elite name and preserve Qualcomm's flagship CPU, modem, NPU and camera capabilities while accepting lower peak graphics performance.

This could also help create clearer price separation between different phones in the same family without forcing the cheaper model to use a completely different chipset architecture.

The Redmi K100 Pro Is Rumoured to Be the First Phone

The original report links the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series to an upcoming Redmi K100 Pro, supposedly scheduled to launch in China on 11 August.

However, I could not confirm that device or launch date through Xiaomi's official websites at the time of writing. The association should therefore be treated as an unconfirmed report rather than an established product announcement.

Qualcomm's own public documentation confirms that the V Series chipset exists, but it does not identify which smartphone will use it first.

More details may emerge once Qualcomm or a device manufacturer formally announces a commercial product based on the SM8850-1-AB platform.

The Name May Be More Confusing Than the Product

Technically, the V Series makes reasonable sense.

It preserves most of Qualcomm's high-end platform while reducing the graphics configuration. The result could suit phones that need strong CPU, AI, photography and connectivity performance without targeting the highest level of mobile gaming.

The branding is the more confusing part.

Consumers now need to distinguish between Snapdragon 8 Elite, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series and Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

Those names are similar enough that buyers may not realise they represent different CPU, GPU or clock configurations.

Qualcomm advises users to consult the specifications supplied by individual manufacturers because CPU speed and platform configuration can vary.

That makes reading the phone's detailed specifications increasingly important. The Snapdragon badge alone may no longer explain exactly which hardware sits inside.

Final Thoughts

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series is now an official Qualcomm product, even though it arrived without the kind of major launch normally associated with a flagship chipset.

Its SM8850-1-AB configuration retains an eight-core Oryon CPU, Hexagon NPU, triple 20-bit camera pipeline, X85 modem, FastConnect 7900 connectivity and most of Qualcomm's flagship gaming and multimedia features.

The major compromise is its Adreno GPU, which uses two slices at 1.2GHz and 12MB of HPM. The regular SM8850-5-AC product brief lists 18MB of HPM, indicating greater graphics resources in the higher configuration.

That difference will probably matter most to heavy mobile gamers. For photography, connectivity, AI and ordinary application performance, the V Series may feel much closer to a full flagship chipset.

Whether it is the result of binning or deliberate product segmentation remains unknown. What is clear is that Qualcomm now has another Snapdragon variation for smartphone manufacturers—and another very similar name for consumers to decipher.
