Malaysian Government will Assess The Effects of the DeepSeek AI Platform in Malaysia

Malaysia's government is taking a closer look at DeepSeek, China's fast-rising open-source artificial intelligence (AI) platform, to assess its potential impact on the country. According to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, DeepSeek has been making waves globally, with reports suggesting that its capabilities could rival, or even surpass, those of OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Speaking after a briefing on a temple digital management system at the Arulmigu Sri Maha Mariamman Thirukkovil Temple, Gobind emphasized that the government is seriously evaluating DeepSeek before considering any local adoption.

"We've seen AI evolve rapidly, from the rise of ChatGPT to many other innovations in the field. This is an ongoing trend, and more AI tools will continue to emerge. It's important that we study these developments carefully and explore how Malaysia can adapt to this evolving technology," he said.

DeepSeek's growth has been nothing short of impressive. According to a report by Anadolu Agency on January 29, the AI chatbot has gained significant traction worldwide, even outperforming ChatGPT in certain markets, including the United States. What's even more remarkable is that DeepSeek operates with fewer resources than its competitors, making it both cost-effective and efficient.

This unexpected rise has sparked conversations in the tech industry, especially since DeepSeek runs on a fraction of the resources required by giants like OpenAI and Google. Its success has even unsettled major tech stocks, particularly in the semiconductor sector, raising questions about the shifting landscape of AI dominance.

For Malaysia, the key question remains: How can the country leverage this technology while staying competitive in the ever-evolving AI space? That's what the government aims to figure out as it continues to analyze DeepSeek's impact.
