X Introduces New “About This Account” Feature to Boost Transparency

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is rolling out a new feature designed to make it easier for users to understand who they're interacting with. Called "About This Account," the update adds a layer of transparency by displaying additional background details on user profiles. The idea is simple: the more information people have about an account's history, the easier it becomes to spot suspicious behaviour or potential bots.

This move fits into X's ongoing effort to clean up inauthentic engagement and give users clearer signals about account legitimacy.

What the New Transparency Feature Shows

With the new "About This Account" section, profiles on X will now display several pieces of account metadata, including:

This kind of information has traditionally been hidden behind the scenes, but X is bringing it forward to help users better evaluate who they're talking to online.

The feature was initially teased back in October, when X head of product Nikita Bier shared that it would first appear on employee profiles before gradually expanding to the general user base.

How to View Your Own Account Details

If you're curious about what X knows about your account, checking your information is straightforward. Simply tap or click the "Joined" date on your profile, whether you're using the app or the desktop site.

A new page, titled "About Your Account," will appear with a breakdown of:

Users can also adjust how much location information they want to reveal. Under Privacy and Safety settings, you'll find options to show your country or a more general region instead.

A Potential VPN Warning Feature on the Horizon

While digging through the platform's code, independent researchers have spotted hints of another possible feature in development: warnings for accounts using VPNs. The idea is that if X detects a VPN, it may notify others that the displayed location might not be accurate.

There's no confirmed release date or guarantee this feature will ship, but it does indicate X's continued push toward greater transparency and discouraging misleading behaviour.

What This Means for X Users

The "About This Account" feature is a small but meaningful step toward helping users distinguish genuine accounts from impersonators, bots, or low-quality engagement. As misinformation becomes harder to detect, platforms like X are looking for practical ways to give users more context without overhauling core systems.
