Intel Eyes Gaming Handheld Market with Panther Lake to Challenge AMD

Intel is gearing up for a bigger push into the gaming handheld space, setting its sights on AMD's stronghold in the market. According to Robert Hallock, Intel's VP and GM of Client AI and Technical Marketing, the company is ramping up efforts to support developers and manufacturers who want to create handheld gaming devices powered by Intel chips.

Intel's Plan to Compete with AMD

In an interview with Laptop Magazine, Hallock revealed that Intel is actively expanding its team to assist gaming software developers (ISVs) looking to enter the handheld gaming sector.

"We're starting several internal programs to give developers more support in optimizing performance for handheld devices," Hallock explained. He emphasized that gaming handhelds are still relatively rare, and Intel wants to make it easier for developers to create devices that compete with AMD-powered alternatives.

Intel's Handheld History and the Panther Lake Play

Intel has already made its first attempt at gaming handhelds with the MSI Claw, which debuted last year featuring an Intel Meteor Lake mobile CPU. However, performance was underwhelming, and the Claw struggled to compete with AMD-based handhelds like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally.

Despite the setback, Intel isn't giving up. The company continued development with the MSI Claw 8 AI+, and now, with the upcoming Panther Lake architecture, it appears to be making a more serious push into the handheld gaming space.

Can Intel Disrupt AMD's Handheld Dominance?

Right now, AMD dominates gaming handhelds, thanks to its efficient APUs that power devices like the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go. Intel faces an uphill battle, but if Panther Lake can deliver better power efficiency, improved graphics, and optimized performance, it could finally give AMD some real competition.
