WhatsApp Is Testing View Once Text Messages, and It Could Make Private Chats Feel More Controlled

WhatsApp has been slowly expanding its "view once" feature over the years, and now it looks like text messages may be next in line. The feature originally arrived in 2021 for photos and videos, giving users a way to send media that could only be opened once by the recipient. Later, WhatsApp extended the same idea to voice messages, making temporary sharing useful for more than just images and clips.

Now, the messaging platform appears to be preparing the same treatment for plain text messages. It may sound like a small update, but it could be quite useful for people who occasionally need to send sensitive information without leaving it permanently visible in a chat history.

A Natural Extension of WhatsApp's Privacy Features

WhatsApp has spent the past few years adding more privacy-focused tools, from disappearing messages to chat lock, screenshot blocking for certain media, and view once voice messages. Bringing view once support to text feels like a logical next step.

There are many situations where users may not want a message to remain available after it has been read. It could be a temporary password, a private note, a one-time instruction, or something personal that does not need to stay in the conversation forever.

Of course, this does not make the message completely impossible to record. Someone could still take a photo of the screen using another device. But it does add a useful layer of control, especially compared to sending a normal message that remains in the chat unless manually deleted.

How View Once Text Messages May Work

According to details found in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.22.7, the feature is still under development. It is not yet available to regular users, and even beta testers do not appear to have access to it at the moment.

Based on the early report, the sending process looks quite simple. Users would type a text message as usual, but instead of tapping the send button normally, they would press and hold it. A dropdown menu would then appear with an option to send the message as "view once."

Once sent, the message would carry the familiar one-time viewing icon, similar to what WhatsApp already uses for view once photos, videos, and voice messages. After the recipient opens it, the message would likely show an "Opened" status, rather than keeping the actual text visible in the chat.

Why This Feature Could Be Useful

View once text messages could be handy because not every private message is a photo, video, or voice note. Sometimes, the most sensitive thing we send is just a short line of text.

Examples may include:

For users who already rely on WhatsApp for daily communication, this could reduce the need to switch to other tools just to send something temporarily.

Extra Protection, But Not Perfect Security

One of the more important parts of this feature is that it should inherit the existing protections used by other view once formats. That means the recipient should not be able to forward, share, or easily screenshot the message within WhatsApp.

This is where the feature becomes more meaningful. If view once text simply disappeared after being opened but could still be forwarded or captured freely, it would not offer much privacy. By blocking forwarding, sharing, and screenshots, WhatsApp gives users a stronger sense of control over how the message is handled.

Still, it is worth being realistic. No digital privacy feature can fully stop someone from using another phone or camera to capture the message. View once text messages should be seen as a privacy improvement, not a guarantee that the content can never be saved.

A Small Feature That Could Change Everyday Messaging

The interesting thing about this update is that it does not radically change WhatsApp. It simply adds another option at the exact moment users may need it.

That is usually how good privacy features should work. They should not make the app more complicated. They should quietly appear when they are useful.

If implemented well, view once text messages could become one of those features that people do not use every day, but appreciate when the situation calls for it. It gives users more flexibility without forcing everyone to change how they normally chat.

When Will It Be Available?

At the moment, there is no confirmed release date. The feature is still being developed, and it has not yet been rolled out to beta testers. That means it may take some time before it reaches the wider WhatsApp user base.

As with many WhatsApp beta discoveries, the feature could change before launch. Meta may adjust how it works, where the option appears, or whether it ships at all. However, the fact that it has appeared in beta code suggests that WhatsApp is actively exploring the idea.

Final Thoughts

View once text messages may not sound as flashy as a major redesign or a brand-new communication feature, but it could be genuinely useful. WhatsApp is already a place where people send everything from casual jokes to important personal details, so giving users more control over what stays visible makes sense.

The feature will not make private messages completely impossible to capture, and users should still be careful when sending sensitive information. But as an extra privacy layer, it could be a practical addition.

If WhatsApp eventually rolls this out, it may become one of those quiet features that fits naturally into everyday messaging. Not every message needs to live forever in a chat history, and view once text could give users a simple way to make that choice.
