Samsung Wallet Adds Maybank MAE QR Payments for Faster Everyday Transactions

Samsung Wallet is becoming more useful for everyday payments in Malaysia. Through a new partnership between Samsung Malaysia and Maybank, eligible Galaxy users can now access Maybank MAE Scan & Pay directly from Samsung Wallet, reducing the need to search for and launch the banking application separately whenever they want to pay by QR code.

The feature began rolling out on 21 July 2026 through the latest Samsung Wallet and Galaxy software updates. Samsung describes it as Malaysia's first QR payment experience integrated into Samsung Wallet, expanding the platform beyond its familiar contactless card-payment functions.

Swipe, Scan and Pay From Samsung Wallet

For users who regularly pay at restaurants, cafés, retail stores and roadside stalls, the main benefit is convenience.

Instead of unlocking the phone, locating the MAE application and navigating to Scan & Pay, users can access Samsung Wallet through its quick-launch gesture. After selecting QR Payment, they can scan a participating merchant's QR code and complete the payment using their linked Maybank account.

The integration supports DuitNow QR payments in Malaysia, meaning it should work across participating merchants displaying compatible DuitNow QR codes rather than being limited only to Maybank-branded payment terminals.

This may only save a few taps during each transaction, but those small differences become noticeable for people who rely on QR payments several times a day.

The MAE Account Still Powers the Transaction

Although the QR option appears inside Samsung Wallet, the underlying banking and payment service continues to come from Maybank.

Users must link an active Maybank MAE account before they can use the feature. Samsung Wallet acts as the convenient starting point, while Maybank's Scan & Pay infrastructure handles the actual transaction.

This distinction matters because Samsung Wallet is not becoming a separate bank account or replacing the funds held within MAE. The integration is better understood as a bridge between Samsung's device interface and Maybank's digital-banking ecosystem.

Samsung says this arrangement removes unnecessary steps while preserving the security and reliability associated with Maybank's payment service.

Cross-Border QR Payments Are Also Supported

The integration is not limited to domestic transactions.

Samsung and Maybank say users can also make supported QR payments while travelling in:

The feature relies on compatible regional QR-payment networks, allowing eligible transactions to be initiated through Samsung Wallet while the linked Maybank service manages the payment.

This could be useful for Malaysians travelling within Southeast Asia, where national QR-payment systems are becoming increasingly interconnected.

Instead of carrying large amounts of foreign currency or relying on a physical bank card for every small purchase, travellers may be able to scan a supported local merchant QR code and pay through their existing Maybank account.

Availability will still depend on the merchant, supported QR network, account status and transaction conditions. Users should also check the final amount and exchange-rate information displayed before confirming an overseas payment.

Malaysia's QR Payment Habits Make the Integration Practical

Contactless card payments remain widely used, but QR codes have become an equally familiar part of Malaysia's payment landscape.

Many smaller businesses, food stalls and service providers may not operate conventional card terminals, but they can still accept payments through a printed DuitNow QR code. This has made QR payments useful across a much broader range of everyday situations.

Samsung Wallet previously focused heavily on card-based transactions. Adding MAE Scan & Pay therefore fills an important gap for Galaxy owners who alternate between tapping a card and scanning a QR code depending on the merchant.

Users can now keep both methods closer together inside the same wallet interface rather than moving repeatedly between Samsung Wallet and their banking application.

Samsung Wallet Has Evolved Beyond Contactless Cards

Samsung's Malaysian payment journey began with the launch of Samsung Pay in February 2017. The original service concentrated primarily on making contactless payments using eligible credit, debit and prepaid cards stored on compatible Galaxy devices. Maybank was already among Samsung's early Malaysian banking partners at the time.

Samsung Wallet arrived in Malaysia in early 2023 as part of a broader expansion into eight additional markets. The new platform was designed to combine payments with other digital essentials, including tickets, credentials, keys and loyalty information.

The Maybank QR integration continues that evolution.

Instead of treating Samsung Wallet as a digital copy of a physical card holder, Samsung is positioning it as a central access point for services people may need throughout the day.

Depending on local support and the user's device, Samsung Wallet can manage payment cards, boarding passes, loyalty memberships, digital keys and other stored information. Adding QR payments makes the application more closely aligned with the way Malaysians actually pay.

Samsung Rewards Points Are Included

Eligible QR transactions made through Samsung Wallet can also earn Samsung Rewards points.

Samsung says the accumulated points may be used towards Samsung products or selected vouchers available through the Samsung Members application.

This adds another incentive to begin the transaction through Samsung Wallet rather than opening MAE directly.

However, users should review the current Samsung Rewards conditions because the number of points, qualifying transactions, monthly limits and available redemptions may vary. The existence of a rewards programme does not necessarily mean that every payment will receive the same number of points.

Samsung's Malaysian rewards information currently describes Samsung Wallet transactions as eligible for points and promotional benefits, subject to the applicable terms.

A Launch Promotion Offers Up to RM20 in Initial Benefits

Samsung and Maybank are supporting the rollout with a promotional campaign running from 28 July to 30 October 2026.

Eligible customers can receive:

Samsung says the campaign has a combined reward allocation of up to RM500,000.

The maximum potential benefit for an eligible participant is therefore RM20, although the additional RM15 depends on fulfilling the campaign's spending conditions.

Users should check the promotion details inside Samsung Wallet before participating. Campaign rewards are commonly subject to eligibility requirements, transaction minimums, limits and availability within the total promotional allocation.

How to Activate Maybank QR Payment in Samsung Wallet

The setup process begins with updating both the Galaxy smartphone and Samsung Wallet.

First, check for the latest system update under the phone's software settings. Samsung says the QR Payment feature is available only on eligible Galaxy smartphones running supported software and the latest Samsung Wallet update.

After updating:

Once activated, users can launch Samsung Wallet with the usual swipe gesture, select QR Payment and scan the merchant's supported code.

The exact menu arrangement may differ slightly according to the device model, Samsung Wallet version and rollout stage.

Not Every Galaxy Phone May Receive It Immediately

Samsung states that the feature is intended for eligible Galaxy smartphones through the latest software and Samsung Wallet updates. It has not published a complete model-by-model compatibility list in the launch announcement.

This means some users may update the application and still not see the QR Payment option straight away.

Possible reasons include:

Users whose Galaxy device was purchased outside Malaysia may also experience differences in Samsung Wallet functionality because wallet features can vary by country and device configuration. Samsung's Malaysian support information warns that devices purchased abroad may not receive the full local wallet experience.

Security Still Depends on the User Checking the Payment

A shorter payment process is convenient, but users should not rush through the confirmation screen.

Before authorising any QR transaction, check:

Scammers sometimes replace genuine merchant QR codes with fraudulent ones or send payment codes through messages and social media. Opening the QR scanner from Samsung Wallet does not guarantee that every scanned code is legitimate.

The user should always confirm that the merchant name on the phone matches the business they intend to pay.

Galaxy owners should also continue protecting their devices with a secure screen lock and biometric authentication. A digital wallet is convenient partly because several payment methods are concentrated in one place, but that also makes proper device security essential.

Why the Maybank Partnership Matters

Samsung could have created a separate QR wallet, but partnering with Maybank gives the feature immediate access to an established local banking ecosystem.

Maybank already has a substantial MAE user base and an existing Scan & Pay service. Samsung contributes the Galaxy interface, quick access and rewards layer, while Maybank supplies the account connection and payment infrastructure.

This makes the integration more practical than asking users to create another wallet, transfer money into a separate balance or maintain an additional payment application.

It also reflects a wider trend in mobile banking: services are increasingly being integrated into the interfaces customers already use rather than forcing them to start every transaction from a traditional banking homepage.

Could More Banks or Wallets Be Added Later?

The launch currently centres on Maybank MAE, and Samsung has not officially confirmed which additional Malaysian banks or e-wallets may join the QR Payment section.

Nevertheless, Samsung Wallet is built around partnerships, and its Malaysian history includes collaborations with multiple banks, card networks and loyalty providers.

If the Maybank integration gains strong adoption, it would be reasonable to expect Samsung to explore additional QR-payment partners. This is an inference rather than a confirmed future plan.

Support for more banks would make Samsung Wallet more valuable to Galaxy users who do not maintain a Maybank account. It could also turn the QR Payment section into a broader platform where users select their preferred banking or wallet provider.

For now, Maybank has the advantage of becoming the first local banking partner for this new Samsung Wallet QR experience.

A Small Update That Could Change Daily Payment Habits

The feature may not appear as dramatic as a new Galaxy phone or a major artificial-intelligence announcement, but it addresses a very common interaction.

People pay for meals, groceries, parking and everyday services far more frequently than they use many of the headline features promoted during smartphone launches.

Reducing QR payment to a swipe, scan and confirmation can therefore have a meaningful effect on how useful Samsung Wallet feels in daily life.

The update also removes one of the practical differences between Samsung Wallet and local banking applications. Galaxy owners no longer need to choose between the quick access of Samsung Wallet and the QR capabilities of MAE—they can use both through a more connected workflow.

Final Thoughts

The addition of Maybank MAE Scan & Pay represents an important local upgrade for Samsung Wallet in Malaysia.

Eligible Galaxy users can now begin supported DuitNow QR transactions directly from the wallet, earn Samsung Rewards points and use compatible cross-border QR networks in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia.

The feature does not replace MAE or create a new bank account. Instead, it brings Maybank's existing QR payment service into a faster and more accessible Samsung interface.

Its long-term value will depend on device compatibility, reliability and whether Samsung eventually introduces additional banking partners. Even in its current form, however, the integration makes Samsung Wallet better suited to Malaysia's combination of contactless card and QR-based payments.

For Galaxy owners who already use Maybank MAE, the update offers a simple but practical benefit: fewer steps between taking out the phone and completing a purchase.
