Malaysia to Enhance Space-Based Connectivity as Strategic Pillar for National Growth

Malaysia is stepping up its investments in space-based communication technologies, with a focus on Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite deployment, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. This move aims to make satellite connectivity a core driver of national development, particularly in digital transformation, industrial expansion, and economic progress.

ALTEL Digital: A Key Enabler

To lead this initiative, Malaysia has launched Altel Digital Integrated Sdn Bhd (ALTEL Digital)—a joint venture between Altel Group and China-based Zhejiang Geespace Technology Co Ltd (Geespace). The company will deliver integrated satellite and telecommunications services, with operations expected to begin by Q4 2025.

Fahmi emphasized that all of ALTEL Digital's core infrastructure—including the Ground Earth Station, Telemetry, Tracking & Command (TT&C) Centre, and Application Data Centre—will be established and run entirely within Malaysia.

Building Local Talent and Expertise

ALTEL Digital's ambitions go beyond technology infrastructure. The company also plans to establish a Centre of Excellence to train local talent in satellite engineering, operations, and technology management.

The initiative includes the introduction of TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programmes and satellite engineering modules in Malaysian universities and colleges. These efforts aim to build a highly skilled, future-ready local workforce through strategic partnerships, including collaborations with Geespace.

A Sustainable and Secure Satellite Ecosystem

According to Fahmi, ALTEL Digital is founded on a mission to create a secure, sustainable, and locally grounded satellite ecosystem, ensuring Malaysia becomes not only a user but also a developer and provider of satellite services in Southeast Asia.

Core Satellite Services to Be Offered

Under its LEO satellite programme, ALTEL Digital plans to offer four key services:

These services are expected to benefit various national industries, including:

Alignment with National Policies

Fahmi stated that the initiative is fully aligned with Malaysia's long-term strategic frameworks, such as:

These efforts, he added, will position Malaysia as a leading regional player in satellite technology and digital connectivity.
