If you're an Android user and a fan of ChatGPT, there's some cool news: the latest beta update (version 1.2025.070) now lets you set ChatGPT as your default assistant app. That means you can finally ditch your system assistant and bring OpenAI's chatbot front and center — literally.
Once you've made the switch, triggering ChatGPT is super easy. You can just long-press the home button (if you're using the classic three-button layout) or swipe up from the bottom corner (if you're on gesture navigation). There's even an option to launch ChatGPT's voice mode by long-pressing the power button — if that feature is turned on in your settings.
Now, before you get too excited, there's a bit of a catch: you can't wake up ChatGPT with a voice command like "Hey ChatGPT" — at least, not yet. That hotword-triggering feature is still off-limits to apps that aren't preinstalled or don't have access to Google's special system-level privileges.
This update comes right as Google is shifting gears, too. The tech giant recently announced that it's starting to replace Google Assistant with its newer AI-powered helper, Gemini. This isn't just a mobile thing — the transition is expected to roll out across a bunch of devices, including tablets, cars, and even wearables. But don't worry, the change will happen gradually over the next few months.
So, if you're curious about using ChatGPT as your everyday digital sidekick, now's a great time to give it a shot — especially if you like having a more conversational, AI-driven experience right at your fingertips.
