Apple Could Be Planning A Second Official Store In Malaysia, And Putrajaya Is Looking Like The Best Bet

Apple may be getting ready to expand its physical retail presence in Malaysia, with Putrajaya emerging as the strongest candidate for a second official Apple Store. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but a fresh wave of retail hiring has given the rumour considerably more weight.

Apple has started advertising a surprisingly large number of retail positions tied to Putrajaya through both its official careers portal and LinkedIn. At the time of writing, the company's careers site shows 22 vacancies associated with Putrajaya, covering everything from customer-facing sales roles to technical support and store operations. That is enough activity to make the possibility of a new outlet difficult to ignore.

A Large Hiring Push Is Fueling The Speculation

The available positions span a broad range of Apple retail functions, including Specialists, Operations Specialists, Technical Specialists, Technical Experts and Geniuses. There are also openings for positions such as Pro, Creative and Genius Admin.

Individually, none of these job listings confirms that Apple is building a new store. Collectively, however, they look very much like the staffing structure required for a full retail operation rather than a small support office or temporary project.

That is why Putrajaya has suddenly become such an interesting location. Apple has not announced anything publicly, and the listings do not specifically mention a forthcoming store, so this remains speculation for now. Still, when one company starts recruiting almost an entire retail team in the same location, people are naturally going to start connecting the dots.

Malaysia Currently Has Just One Official Apple Store

Apple only opened its first official Malaysian retail store relatively recently, with Apple The Exchange TRX becoming the company's first directly operated outlet in the country.

That store represented a major change for Malaysian Apple customers. Before TRX, buyers largely depended on authorised resellers and online channels if they wanted Apple products locally. The arrival of an official Apple Store brought Malaysia closer to the retail experience Apple offers in larger international markets.

A second outlet would therefore be significant. It would suggest that Apple sees enough demand in Malaysia to justify expanding beyond a single flagship location in Kuala Lumpur.

A Putrajaya Store Could Serve A Different Crowd

Putrajaya would also make sense geographically.

The Exchange TRX is positioned right in central Kuala Lumpur, making it convenient for customers around the city and surrounding urban areas. Putrajaya, by comparison, sits further south and would potentially serve customers from Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, southern Klang Valley and nearby parts of Selangor.

That could help Apple reach users who currently need to travel into central Kuala Lumpur for the full official-store experience.

The location would also be interesting from a business and government perspective, given Putrajaya's role as Malaysia's administrative capital and Cyberjaya's nearby technology ecosystem.

Exactly where such a store might be located is still anyone's guess, but a large retail development in the Putrajaya area would seem like the obvious place to look.

What A Second Apple Store Could Offer

If the potential Putrajaya outlet follows the same general model as Apple The Exchange TRX, customers could expect considerably more than shelves full of iPhones and Macs.

Apple Stores typically combine retail, technical support, product demonstrations, workshops and after-sales services under one roof. That makes them part showroom, part service centre and part community space.

At the TRX store, customers can purchase Apple devices and accessories directly, collect online orders and get hands-on experience with the company's current product lineup. There are dedicated areas where visitors can try products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods before deciding what to buy.

Apple Specialists are also available to help customers compare devices, configure new products and understand the differences between various models.

Genius Bar Support Would Be One Of The Bigger Advantages

One of the most useful things about having an official Apple Store nearby is access to the Genius BarRather than relying entirely on third-party service centres, customers can receive assistance directly through Apple for troubleshooting, setup issues and technical problems.

This becomes particularly valuable for users who need help diagnosing a device before deciding whether repair or replacement is necessary.

If a Putrajaya store eventually opens with the same support structure, it could substantially improve convenience for Apple users living south of Kuala Lumpur.

Trade-In Services Could Be Available Too

Apple The Exchange TRX also supports the company's trade-in programme.

Eligible customers can bring in an older device and have its value assessed. Depending on the device and its condition, that value can then be applied toward a new purchase or provided as Apple credit.

For anyone regularly upgrading between iPhones, Macs or other Apple hardware, having that option directly inside an official store makes the process considerably simpler.

A second Malaysian outlet would likely help expand access to the programme, assuming Apple chooses to offer the same services there.

Workshops And Product Sessions Could Also Make A Return

Official Apple Stores increasingly act as places where customers can learn how to use their devices rather than simply purchase them.

At The Exchange TRX, Apple uses its Forum area for sessions, demonstrations and workshops covering different products and creative activities.

Similar programmes could potentially appear at a Putrajaya outlet if Apple decides to follow the same retail concept.

That would make the store particularly useful for people who want to learn more about photography, video editing, productivity or other Apple-focused workflows without having to depend entirely on online tutorials.

Will A Putrajaya Store Be Identical To TRX?

Not necessarily.

Apple designs many of its stores around the location, available space and surrounding architecture, so a second Malaysian outlet could end up looking quite different from TRX.

The services offered could vary as well.

A smaller store might place greater emphasis on retail and technical support, while a larger location could include more extensive workshop and community areas.

For now, there is simply no way to know.

What the current recruitment activity suggests is that Apple may be preparing for a fairly substantial retail operation rather than something minimal.

Don't Expect The Doors To Open Immediately

Even if these vacancies are indeed connected to a second Apple Store, history suggests the opening may still be some distance away.

Apple began recruiting for retail positions connected with its first Malaysian store back in December 2022.

The Exchange TRX eventually opened on 22 June 2024, meaning roughly a year and a half passed between the early recruitment phase and the actual store launch.

If Apple follows anything close to that timeline again, a hypothetical Putrajaya outlet might not open anytime soon.

Hiring retail staff is only one part of the process. Apple would still need to complete construction, interior design, systems preparation, employee training, inventory planning and countless other details before opening day.

Why Putrajaya Would Be An Interesting Choice

What makes the rumour particularly intriguing is that many people might have expected Apple's second Malaysian store to appear somewhere such as Penang or Johor Bahru.

Those cities have large populations, strong retail markets and plenty of Apple users.

Choosing Putrajaya instead would suggest Apple is taking a more Klang Valley-focused expansion strategy first, building out its presence around Greater Kuala Lumpur before moving into other states.

That strategy would not be particularly surprising. The wider Klang Valley remains Malaysia's largest concentration of consumers, businesses and technology users, making it the lowest-risk area for another flagship retail investment.

Whether Apple eventually moves into Penang, Johor or other regions could depend heavily on how its first few Malaysian stores perform.

Final Thoughts

There is still no official confirmation that Apple is opening a second Malaysian store, so the Putrajaya speculation should remain exactly that for now.

Still, 22 retail vacancies across such a wide range of Apple Store roles are difficult to overlook.

If those positions do turn out to be connected to a new outlet, Putrajaya could become home to Malaysia's second official Apple Store and give customers outside central Kuala Lumpur much easier access to Apple's full retail and support experience.

The bigger question may not be whether Apple wants another store in Malaysia, but how quickly the company intends to expand after finally establishing its own retail presence here.

And judging by Apple's previous Malaysian recruitment timeline, even if Putrajaya really is next, we may still be waiting quite a while before the familiar Apple logo appears above another set of glass doors.
