Malaysia is stepping into a new era of mobile security. Beginning tomorrow, all major telecommunications companies will start integrating MyDigital ID into their mobile apps, bringing stronger identity verification to millions of users nationwide. It marks one of the most ambitious efforts yet to curb the wave of scams, impersonation attempts, and fraudulent SIM card misuse affecting Malaysians daily.
While the shift may feel technical on the surface, its goal is simple: ensure every mobile number in the country is tied to a verified, trusted identity.
Why This Integration Matters Now
Scams tied to mobile numbers have surged across Malaysia. Fake registrations, recycled numbers, SIM cards bought with stolen identities, and unsecured app logins have all contributed to a growing security problem. In 2024 alone, authorities logged an alarming 2.98 million scam calls, almost doubling the 1.63 million reported the year before.
Telcos and regulators are now working together to plug these vulnerabilities by introducing verified digital identity checks powered by MyDigital ID.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and supported by the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa). It aligns with the broader Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy 2025–2030, which aims to create a safer, more resilient digital ecosystem.
What Exactly Is Changing?
The rollout introduces three major security upgrades that will eventually apply to all telco users in Malaysia. While each telco may begin with different components, the end result will be the same: stronger protection for every user.
Users will be able to check all prepaid numbers registered under their MyKad. This feature empowers users to spot numbers they never signed up for and helps shut down SIM cards potentially used by scammers or third parties.
Going forward, any new prepaid SIM card must be verified using MyDigital ID through the telco's app. This ensures no one can activate a number under someone else's identity, a loophole that scammers have long exploited.
Instead of relying on passwords or SMS codes, users will be able to log in to telco apps using MyDigital ID. This Single Sign-On method lowers the risks of phishing, account takeovers, and unauthorised access.
How MyDigital ID Works Behind the Scenes
MyDigital ID is designed as a secure identity confirmation system that relies on authoritative government records maintained by the National Registration Department. According to Nacsa chief executive Ir. Dr Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin, this greatly reduces the chances of scammers manipulating fake or mismatched identities.
Importantly, MyDigital ID functions strictly as a verification tool. It does not store your personal information, track your online behaviour, or collect new data. Identity checks are performed only with your consent, placing control firmly in the hands of users.
MyDigital ID chief executive officer Nik Hisham Nik Ibrahim emphasises that this move is crucial to restoring digital trust. By ensuring every mobile number is linked to a legitimate identity, Malaysia can dramatically reduce identity fraud and safeguard the digital economy.
What Users Should Do Next
The exact rollout timeline may differ between telcos, as each provider may introduce certain features before others. Users are encouraged to refer directly to their telco's official website or mobile app for instructions on how to begin using MyDigital ID with their mobile accounts.
As this nationwide effort unfolds, Malaysians can expect a more secure, trusted, and scam-resistant mobile experience—built on verified identities and modern cybersecurity practices.
