Huawei Could Be Preparing New MatePad Tablets With Improved PaperMatte Displays

Huawei may be getting ready to introduce a new generation of MatePad tablets with upgraded display technology and slimmer screen borders. While the company has yet to officially reveal the devices, recent rumours suggest that the refreshed tablet lineup could arrive in the coming months as part of Huawei's wider product plans for the second half of 2026.

The biggest expected upgrade appears to be focused on the display. Huawei is reportedly working on newer versions of its PaperMatte screen technology, which has become one of the more distinctive features of its recent tablets.

A More Refined PaperMatte Display Experience

Huawei's PaperMatte display is designed to reduce the glossy reflections commonly found on conventional tablet screens. Instead of using a standard shiny glass surface, the panel uses a specially treated matte finish that helps scatter light and minimise glare.

This can make a noticeable difference when using a tablet near windows, under office lighting, or outdoors. Reflections from lamps and bright surroundings can often make regular displays uncomfortable to use, especially when reading documents, browsing the web, or watching videos for long periods.

The technology also gives the screen a slightly more paper-like texture when used with a stylus. For users who frequently take notes, sketch, annotate PDFs, or work on digital documents, this added friction can make writing feel more controlled compared to drawing directly on a smooth glass panel.

Less Glare, Fewer Fingerprints, and Better Comfort

Another potential advantage of the PaperMatte approach is that it can help reduce visible fingerprints and smudges. Glossy displays tend to show oily marks quickly, particularly on larger tablets that are constantly touched, swiped, and handled throughout the day.

A matte surface generally stays looking cleaner for longer, while also reducing the need to wipe the display as frequently.

Huawei's existing PaperMatte screens also include eye-comfort features intended to reduce flicker and make long viewing sessions easier on the eyes. This could be particularly useful for students, office users, digital artists, and anyone who spends extended periods reading or working from a tablet.

The rumoured upcoming models may take this technology further, although Huawei has not yet confirmed exactly what improvements the next-generation PaperMatte display could introduce.

Ultra-Narrow Bezels Could Be Another Major Change

Beyond the display coating itself, Huawei is also expected to focus on reducing the black borders around the screen.

Thinner bezels can make a tablet feel more modern and immersive, particularly when viewing videos, editing photos, reading ebooks, or using split-screen multitasking. A larger display area within a similar overall body size can also make the device more comfortable to carry while still offering more usable screen space.

Huawei's MatePad Pro Max already features notably slim display borders measuring around 3.5mm. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming models will push this design even further.

Possible Price Increase on the Way

The same report suggests that the new MatePad tablets may arrive with a higher price tag than their predecessors.

That would not be surprising if Huawei is introducing upgraded display technology, slimmer hardware design, and other premium improvements. However, pricing will be especially important because tablets remain a competitive category, with buyers often comparing them against iPads, Samsung Galaxy Tabs, and other Android alternatives.

Huawei will need to show that the updated PaperMatte display, stylus experience, and overall build quality can justify any increase in cost.

Final Thoughts

Huawei's next MatePad tablets could be a worthwhile upgrade for users who value a more comfortable screen experience, especially for reading, writing, drawing, and everyday productivity.

The PaperMatte display has already helped Huawei stand out from many competing tablets, and an improved version combined with ultra-thin bezels could make the new models even more appealing. For now, though, the details remain based on early reports, so the final hardware specifications, pricing, and launch date will need to wait for Huawei's official announcement.
