The National Library of Malaysia Reinvents Itself in the Digital Era

For decades, the National Library of Malaysia (PNM) was seen as a quiet, traditional space — rows of bookshelves, hushed conversations, and the faint scent of old pages. But that image is rapidly changing. Today, PNM is on a mission to redefine what a library can be, embracing virtual reality, holograms, and interactive technology to become a vibrant hub of digital learning and cultural exploration.

From Bookshelves to Holograms

Under the guidance of National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang, the library has taken bold steps to modernize its environment. At the heart of this transformation lies the Immersive Learning Centre, a futuristic space inside PNM's main building that features holo-walls, curved LED displays, and touch-enabled information panels.

According to Wan Azuan Shah Wan Mohamed, PNM's Digital Project Management Director, the goal is no longer just to store books — it's to inspire creativity and innovation among visitors, especially the younger generation.
"We want to move beyond being a repository of documents," he explained. "The idea is to make learning engaging, exploratory, and on par with global digital education trends."

A Playground for Digital Discovery

To make that vision real, PNM has gone far beyond standard reading spaces. Visitors can now explore a virtual reality zone, e-sports area, robotics corner, holographic room, and even a metaverse chamber. A stunning Tree of Knowledge installation ties these experiences together, symbolizing growth through technology and learning.

Each section is more than just entertainment — the games and activities are inspired by PNM's own collections. For instance, cultural-themed interactive games let visitors match foods or clothing styles with Malaysia's diverse ethnic groups, blending education with unity and fun.

"Every activity is built around the materials we have," said Wan Azuan. "We want people to learn while playing, to connect our heritage with modern digital tools."

The u-Pustaka System: Libraries Without Borders

PNM's digital transformation isn't limited to physical spaces. Its upgraded u-Pustaka system has become a model of accessibility, linking 12 libraries nationwide and providing search access across 191 catalogues — all available 24/7.

"Imagine being in Kuala Lumpur and wanting a book from Sabah," said Kasuma Dewi Said, Senior Deputy Director of Library Systems and Networks. "With u-Pustaka, that book can be posted straight to your doorstep via Poslaju. It's that convenient."

Currently, u-Pustaka offers over 293,000 digital titles — including books, magazines, journals, newspapers, audiobooks, and e-learning content — sourced from 17 data centres. The platform now serves over 1 million registered members, with around 100,000 active users every year.

Safeguarding Heritage in the Digital Age

While innovation is central to PNM's vision, preserving cultural heritage remains just as vital. The National Malay Manuscript Centre (PKMM) within PNM continues to digitize priceless Jawi manuscripts that date back centuries. Since its founding in 1985, the centre has compiled more than 5,300 original manuscripts and 5,000 digitized texts, making it one of the world's most significant Malay literary archives.

Among the recent acquisitions is a manuscript believed to document the life of Mat Kilau, the legendary Malay warrior who fought against British colonial rule. "The manuscript underwent careful preservation and now resides in PNM for public reference," said Fatimah Abdul Hai, PKMM's Senior Deputy Director.

To date, 10 Malay manuscripts from PNM have earned UNESCO Memory of the World recognition, while 12 others have been officially listed as national heritage objects under Malaysia's National Heritage Act 2005 — a testament to the library's dual mission of innovation and preservation.

A Library for the Future

The National Library of Malaysia's evolution is more than a technological upgrade — it's a cultural shift. It represents a new era where libraries are no longer silent halls of study, but immersive spaces that connect history with digital possibilities.

As holograms light up next to ancient manuscripts, and e-sports share space with classic literature, PNM stands as proof that even the most traditional institutions can thrive in the age of innovation — without losing sight of their roots.
