GPU Thieves Tried to Steal RTX 5080s From Esports Hotels by Swapping in RTX 3060 Cards

High-end gaming hardware has apparently become such a tempting target that thieves in China are now targeting esports hotels specifically for their expensive graphics cards. In one recent case, two suspects allegedly targeted hotel gaming PCs equipped with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 GPUs. But instead of simply removing the cards and leaving obviously broken machines behind, they reportedly came prepared with older RTX 3060 GPUs to swap in their place.

The plan was clever enough that it might have worked—if an unexpected power outage had not drawn attention to what they were doing.

The Thieves Were Swapping GPUs, Not Just Stealing Them

The alleged method was relatively straightforward.

The suspects would first identify esports hotels offering rooms equipped with high-end gaming PCs. After gaining access to the machines, they would remove the more valuable RTX 5080 or RTX 5070 cards and replace them with older RTX 3060 models.

The idea was to delay discovery.

A PC with its graphics card completely removed would immediately raise suspicion because it would no longer function normally. Replacing the stolen hardware with a working RTX 3060 meant the machine could still boot and run games.

At worst, Windows might detect the hardware change and reload the graphics driver or require a restart.

For hotel staff who were not closely monitoring the exact hardware configuration of every PC, the theft could potentially remain unnoticed for some time.

A Power Outage Exposed the Scheme

The thieves' latest attempt reportedly took place in July.

While they were staying at the hotel, the room they were using suddenly lost power. The outage was believed to have been related to their tampering with the gaming PCs.

One of the suspects contacted the front desk and requested to move to another room.

That turned out to be the mistake that exposed the entire operation.

Electricians were sent to inspect the original room and noticed unusual pry marks on the gaming computers. Their observations were reported to hotel staff, who then began examining other rooms previously used by the same guests.

The inspection revealed that some of the hotel's high-end GPUs had disappeared.

In their place were RTX 3060 cards.

The Replacement Cards Helped Hide the Theft

The use of functional replacement hardware appears to have been central to the scheme.

Rather than leaving behind obviously damaged gaming PCs, the suspects reportedly ensured that the machines continued operating after the valuable GPUs were removed.

That could have allowed the thefts to remain undetected until someone noticed significantly lower gaming performance or checked the hardware directly.

Considering that esports hotels advertise their rooms partly based on the gaming specifications available, a customer expecting an RTX 5080 would eventually notice if the machine was actually running an RTX 3060.

But by then, the thieves could have been long gone.

RTX 5080 Cards Made an Attractive Target

The RTX 5080 sits near the top of NVIDIA's current consumer graphics lineup, making it considerably more valuable than the older RTX 3060 cards allegedly used as replacements.

The source estimates RTX 5080 cards at around RM8,000 each on average, meaning that even stealing a small number of them could generate a substantial amount of money.

The suspects allegedly planned to resell the stolen GPUs for roughly half their normal market value.

Even after accounting for the RTX 3060 cards they needed to purchase for the swaps, the difference in value could still make the scheme profitable.

This Apparently Wasn't Their First Attempt

Perhaps the more concerning detail is that the suspects were reportedly not attempting this for the first time.

Previous thefts using the same method had allegedly already earned them close to RM50,000.

That suggests the strategy had worked well enough previously for the pair to repeat it.

The thieves may simply have become increasingly confident after earlier hotels failed to discover the missing hardware quickly.

Without the unexpected power failure and the electricians noticing damage to the PCs, the latest theft might also have gone unnoticed.

Esports Hotels Face a Unique Hardware Security Problem

Esports hotels are particularly attractive targets because they combine public access with extremely valuable computer hardware.

Unlike a conventional gaming café, where several staff members may constantly monitor the gaming area, hotel rooms offer guests significantly more privacy.

That makes it easier for someone with basic PC hardware knowledge to open a case and remove components without being immediately noticed.

High-value parts such as GPUs are also relatively easy to transport and resell compared with an entire computer.

The incident shows why operators may increasingly need stronger physical security measures around expensive gaming systems.

Tamper seals, locked cases, hardware inventory monitoring or automatic alerts when major components change could make similar thefts harder to conceal.

Final Thoughts

The alleged RTX 5080 theft scheme was surprisingly well thought out.

By replacing high-end RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 cards with functioning RTX 3060 GPUs, the suspects could keep the hotel PCs operational and potentially delay discovery long enough to disappear with the stolen hardware.

Ironically, it was not sophisticated security technology that exposed them.

It was a power outage and a suspicious electrician.

With premium GPUs now worth thousands of ringgit each, esports hotels may need to treat the components inside their gaming PCs almost like other high-value hotel assets.

Because when a graphics card can be removed in minutes and resold for a substantial amount of money, simply checking whether the PC still turns on may no longer be enough.
