A technical glitch at AEON Bank briefly left one customer looking at an account balance exceeding RM1 billion, after an incorrect transaction linked to a promotional campaign appeared in his banking app on 14 October. The unusual adjustment was quickly reported to the bank, which temporarily restricted the affected account while investigating the issue. The erroneous amount was reversed later the same day, leaving the customer's actual balance unchanged.
AEON Bank has since acknowledged that a technical issue associated with one of its recent promotional campaigns caused some customer balances to display incorrectly. The digital bank stressed that the incident did not involve a security breach and that no customer accounts or personal information were compromised.
Customer Suddenly Sees RM1,000,315,879 In His Account
The incident gained attention after the customer shared a screenshot on Threads showing a transaction worth RM1,000,315,879, recorded at approximately 10.36am. Understandably, the enormous amount immediately raised questions about what had happened inside the banking system.
The transaction appeared under the category "Bank adjustment" and carried the description "Cash Reward – Merdeka / Malaysia Day 2026 Campaign (Cycle 6)". This strongly suggested that the unexpected billion-Ringgit credit was connected to AEON Bank's promotional reward system rather than a genuine transfer from another person or organisation.
Instead of attempting to move or spend the money, the customer contacted AEON Bank directly to report the abnormal transaction.
Error Linked To Merdeka And Malaysia Day Campaign
The transaction description corresponded with AEON Bank's Merdeka and Malaysia Day 2026 promotional campaign, which ran from 17 August until 27 September 2026. Under the campaign, customers who spent at least RM15 using DuitNow QR could stand a chance to receive a cash reward.
The actual reward amount was only RM31, making the RM1 billion adjustment obviously far beyond what the campaign intended to distribute. AEON Bank had allocated a total of RM12,834 in rewards for 414 winners across six weekly cycles.
That makes the incorrect RM1,000,315,879 adjustment especially remarkable, considering the value displayed in the customer's account was vastly larger than the entire promotional prize pool.
AEON Bank Temporarily Restricted The Account
After the customer contacted AEON Bank, his account was temporarily restricted while the bank investigated and corrected the transaction. This was likely a precautionary measure to prevent any accidental movement of the incorrectly credited funds while the issue was being resolved.
The bank subsequently reversed the transaction on the same day. Once the correction was completed, the customer's original account balance remained unaffected and no legitimate funds were lost.
In a later Threads update, the customer confirmed that the problem had been resolved successfully.
Customer May Receive A Reward For Reporting The Error
Interestingly, the customer also said AEON Bank had indicated that it planned to offer him some form of reward for reporting the problem. At the time, however, no details had been provided regarding the amount or nature of that reward.
Reporting the issue immediately was certainly the right thing to do. Seeing RM1 billion suddenly appear inside a bank account might make for an amusing screenshot, but attempting to withdraw or transfer money that is clearly the result of an error could create serious complications.
By notifying the bank instead, the customer allowed AEON Bank to investigate the problem and reverse the transaction without affecting his legitimate funds.
AEON Bank Confirms Incorrect Balance Displays
AEON Bank later issued a public statement confirming that an issue connected with a recent promotional campaign had caused some account balances to display incorrectly. The bank said the problem was resolved promptly after being identified.
More importantly, AEON Bank emphasised that the issue did not involve compromised customer accounts or leaked information. This suggests the incident was related to an internal transaction or balance-processing error rather than a cybersecurity attack.
An incorrect balance can certainly look alarming, but it does not automatically mean the banking platform itself has been hacked.
Technical Cause Has Not Been Revealed
AEON Bank has not disclosed exactly what caused the extraordinary RM1 billion figure to appear. It remains unclear whether the problem came from an incorrect reward value, database processing error, software bug or another internal technical issue.
The bank has also not stated how many customers experienced incorrect balances. Its statement only confirmed that some account displays had been affected by the promotional issue.
Without additional technical details, it is difficult to know whether this customer's RM1 billion adjustment was an isolated case or simply the most extreme example of a wider display problem.
Digital Banks Still Depend On Complex Automated Systems
Digital banks rely heavily on automated systems to process transactions, calculate balances, distribute promotional rewards and update account information in real time. These systems are designed with safeguards, but software errors can still happen, particularly when several automated processes interact.
What matters is how quickly the bank identifies and corrects the problem. In this case, AEON Bank reversed the erroneous transaction on the same day after the customer raised the issue.
The incident is also a good reminder that customers should occasionally review their transaction history rather than focusing only on the balance displayed at the top of the app.
What Should You Do If Money Appears In Your Account By Mistake?
If an unexpected amount suddenly appears in your bank account, the safest approach is to leave the funds untouched and contact the bank through its official support channels. An incorrect transaction may eventually be reversed once the error is detected.
Customers should also keep screenshots and transaction details until the issue has been fully resolved. These can help explain what happened if customer service needs additional information.
Most importantly, do not assume that an unexpected credit automatically belongs to you simply because it appears in the account.
Final Thoughts
Seeing more than RM1 billion suddenly appear inside a banking app would certainly be an unforgettable experience, but in this case it was simply the result of a technical problem linked to AEON Bank's promotional campaign. The customer reported the issue quickly, the account was temporarily restricted, and the incorrect RM1,000,315,879 transaction was reversed on the same day.
AEON Bank has confirmed that no customer accounts or information were compromised, although it has not revealed the exact technical cause of the error or how many customers were affected.
The incident ended without any financial loss, but it serves as a rather spectacular reminder that even highly automated digital banking systems can occasionally produce some very unrealistic numbers.
