RTM's retro-focused television channel, TV6, is set to cease broadcasting from 1 July 2026. The announcement was shared through the channel's official social-media presence, bringing an end to a service that gave viewers an easy way to revisit older Malaysian programmes from RTM's archive. Reports indicate that no detailed reason for the closure has been announced so far.
For viewers who enjoy classic local entertainment, TV6 has occupied a fairly unique space in Malaysia's television lineup. Rather than focusing on new premieres or current affairs, the channel was built around nostalgia, featuring dramas, films, cartoons, documentaries, music programmes, and entertainment shows from different eras of RTM broadcasting.
A Channel Built Around RTM's Archive
TV6 began as a trial service in March 2021 before moving to a longer daily schedule later that year. Its programming ranged from older Malay dramas and classic films to retro entertainment, documentaries, and children's content that originally aired from the 1960s through more recent decades.
It offered something different from the usual modern channel format. For many viewers, it was not necessarily about following a new show every week. Instead, it was a place to rediscover familiar programmes, revisit older productions, or simply enjoy content that reflected earlier periods of Malaysian television.
Some archive programmes may still appear on other RTM channels such as TV1, TV2, and TV Okey, but TV6 was the dedicated home for this type of retrospective content.
Availability Across Traditional and Online Platforms
Before its closure, TV6 was available in HD through MYTV on channel 113, as well as through online streaming options such as RTMKlik and MYTV Mana Mana. RTMKlik still maintains a TV6 listing at the time of writing, although that is expected to change once the closure takes effect.
The channel's removal will be most noticeable for viewers who preferred streaming or free-to-air access to classic RTM programming. While many programmes may continue to exist within RTM's wider archive, it remains unclear whether there will be a dedicated replacement destination for TV6-style content.
No Official Explanation Yet
RTM has not publicly detailed why TV6 is being discontinued, nor has it confirmed whether its archive-heavy programming will be moved to another channel, made available on demand, or distributed more widely across RTMKlik.
It is easy to speculate about viewership, programming strategy, operational costs, or a wider restructuring of RTM's channel offerings. However, these remain assumptions until RTM provides an official explanation.
What is clear is that TV6's departure removes a dedicated nostalgia channel from Malaysia's television landscape, especially one that focused heavily on preserving and resurfacing RTM's older content for modern audiences.
Lemon Web-TV Will Also Remove TV6
In line with RTM's scheduled shutdown, Lemon Web-TV will also remove TV6 from its channel listing once the cessation takes effect on 1 July 2026.
The channel will no longer be available through Lemon Web-TV after that point, as there will no longer be an active official TV6 broadcast stream to carry. Viewers who regularly use Lemon Web-TV for RTM channels may still continue watching other available services, while any future replacement or archive channel will be considered if RTM introduces an official alternative.
Final Thoughts
TV6 may not have been RTM's biggest channel, but it served a clear purpose for viewers who appreciated older local programmes and Malaysia's television history. Its closure marks the end of a short but distinctive chapter for retro programming on free-to-air and online platforms.
The biggest remaining question is what happens to the content next. Hopefully, RTM will continue making more of its archive accessible through its existing channels or digital services, so these programmes do not quietly disappear from public view.
