PlayStation is expanding the PS5 beyond gaming with the launch of a new Live TV feature in the United States, giving console owners access to more than 100 ad-supported television channels directly from their system. The move is slightly ironic for anyone who remembers the launch battle between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One more than a decade ago. Back then, Microsoft heavily promoted the Xbox One as an all-in-one entertainment system combining games, television and other media, while Sony kept the PS4 messaging firmly focused on gaming. Fast-forward to 2026, and PlayStation itself is now bringing traditional-style television directly onto its console.
More Than 100 Free Live Channels
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, US PS5 owners can find the new Live TV option directly inside the console's Media tab. There is no additional application to download, which should make getting started relatively straightforward.
Users simply open Live TV and select "Sign In With My PlayStation Account." Once logged in, they gain access to more than 100 live channels together with a growing collection of on-demand programming.
The available content spans several categories, including news, sports, movies, television series and anime. Programming is supplied through Sony Pictures Television, effectively bringing content from one part of Sony's wider entertainment business directly into the PlayStation ecosystem.
Free to Watch, but Supported by Advertising
The service follows the increasingly popular free ad-supported streaming television, or FAST, model. Instead of paying a monthly subscription, viewers watch advertising in exchange for access to programming.
FAST services have become increasingly common as consumers become overwhelmed by the number of individual streaming subscriptions available. Rather than asking users to pay for yet another entertainment service, companies can offer scheduled channels and older on-demand content funded by advertising.
For Sony, the PS5 already sits underneath millions of televisions, making it an obvious platform for this type of service. Users who normally switch between their console and smart TV apps may now be able to consume more entertainment without leaving the PlayStation interface at all.
US First, Canada Coming Next
For now, Live TV on PS5 is available only in the United States. Sony says an expansion into Canada is already being prepared, while other regions remain under consideration.
That means Malaysian PS5 owners should probably not expect immediate availability.
International streaming services are rarely as simple as turning on a feature globally. Sony would need to deal with broadcasting rights, regional licensing agreements, advertising arrangements and content restrictions before introducing Live TV elsewhere.
The company says it will continue exploring additional regions, but it has not provided a timetable for markets beyond the US and Canada.
The Xbox One Irony Is Difficult to Ignore
The announcement will undoubtedly remind longtime console players of Microsoft's original Xbox One strategy.
When Microsoft revealed the Xbox One in 2013, the company placed enormous emphasis on television, multimedia features and an entertainment-centre concept. That messaging frustrated gamers who wanted to hear about games rather than how the console could control their television.
Sony responded with a much simpler message around the PlayStation 4: this is a gaming console built for games.
That contrast contributed significantly to the early perception of both systems.
Sony also famously mocked Microsoft's controversial game-sharing and DRM plans with its short PS4 game-sharing demonstration, reinforcing the idea that PlayStation understood what gamers actually wanted.
More than a decade later, the situation looks very different. Microsoft eventually moved away from much of its original Xbox One vision, while Sony is now gradually adding some of the multimedia functionality that once attracted criticism.
PS5 Has Already Become More Than a Gaming Machine
Of course, the reality is that modern consoles have been entertainment devices for years.
Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Spotify and numerous other streaming services already run on the PS5. Plenty of people use their consoles for video almost as often as they use them for games.
Live TV therefore does not represent a complete change of direction. It simply pushes Sony deeper into an area where the console is increasingly competing with smart TVs, streaming boxes and entertainment hubs.
The important difference is that Sony now owns much more of the experience itself. Rather than simply hosting third-party streaming applications, it can use Sony Pictures Television content and potentially create a more tightly integrated entertainment service inside PlayStation.
Sony's Wider Strategy Is Changing
The development also arrives as Sony increasingly experiments with what the PlayStation ecosystem should become beyond traditional game sales.
Digital distribution has become dominant, subscription services such as PlayStation Plus have expanded, and physical media plays a smaller role than it did during earlier console generations.
Against that backdrop, an ad-supported television service makes strategic sense. The more reasons Sony can give people to keep using the PlayStation interface, the more valuable the platform becomes for subscriptions, advertising, entertainment and future services.
Whether gamers actually want their console becoming another television platform is a separate question.
Could Live TV Eventually Reach Malaysia?
Technically, there is no reason a similar service could not eventually arrive in Malaysia. The challenge would be content.
A Malaysian version would almost certainly need a substantially different channel lineup because many US broadcasting and streaming rights do not apply internationally. Sony would also need local advertising partners and suitable regional content.
That makes a simple worldwide rollout unlikely.
If Live TV proves successful in the United States and Canada, however, Sony may have a stronger reason to invest in additional markets over time.
Until Sony provides an official announcement, Malaysian users should treat any potential availability as speculation.
Final Thoughts
PlayStation's decision to bring more than 100 ad-supported live television channels to the PS5 is an interesting evolution of the console. US users can access the service directly through the Media tab without downloading another app, giving them free access to news, sports, movies, television and anime in exchange for advertising. Canada is already next on Sony's expansion list, although there is currently no confirmed plan for Malaysia or other regions.
The irony for longtime console fans is hard to miss. Sony once benefited enormously by presenting PlayStation as the straightforward gaming alternative to Microsoft's multimedia-heavy Xbox One strategy. Now, more than a decade later, PlayStation itself is increasingly becoming the kind of all-purpose entertainment machine Microsoft originally imagined. The difference is that this time, Sony is adding those features after firmly establishing the PS5 as a gaming platform rather than asking them to define the console from day one.
