Malaysians To Receive 10GB Free Mobile Data for National Day and Malaysia Day 2026

Malaysians will have a little extra reason to celebrate National Day and Malaysia Day this year, with the government announcing 10GB of free mobile data for eligible Malaysian users as part of the country's 2026 celebrations.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the initiative under the Rahmah National Day and Malaysia Day 2026 Rebate Incentive, which brings together the Communications Ministry and Malaysia's five major telecommunications providers — Maxis, CelcomDigi, TM, U Mobile and YES.

Rather than receiving the entire allocation at once, the free data will be divided between Malaysia's two major national celebrations, giving users an additional 5GB on National Day and another 5GB on Malaysia Day.

And importantly, the initiative isn't limited to prepaid customers. Both prepaid and postpaid subscribers are expected to benefit, subject to the eligibility requirements that will eventually be announced by the respective telcos.

5GB on National Day, Another 5GB on Malaysia Day

The distribution has been structured around the two key dates on Malaysia's calendar.

Eligible Malaysian citizens are expected to receive:

5GB of free mobile data on 31 August 2026, in conjunction with National Day.

Another 5GB on 16 September 2026, in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

That brings the total allocation to 10GB per eligible user across both celebrations.

The approach is quite practical as well. Instead of concentrating the entire allocation around one occasion, Malaysians get additional mobile data during both major national celebrations.

For users who rely heavily on mobile connectivity for streaming, navigation, messaging, social media or working remotely, an extra 5GB on each occasion could certainly come in handy.

The Telcos Will Handle the Redemption Details

While the headline announcement is straightforward, there are still some details that haven't been made clear yet.

Fahmi said each participating telecommunications company will make its own announcement explaining matters such as how customers can redeem the free data, how long the allocation remains valid and any eligibility requirements that may apply.

That means the process might not necessarily be identical across Maxis, CelcomDigi, TM, U Mobile and YES.

One provider might automatically credit the data to eligible accounts, for example, while another could require customers to claim it through an application, USSD menu or promotional page.

For now, users will need to wait for their respective telcos to provide those instructions.

At the time of the original announcement, none of the five participating operators had published detailed redemption information through their official websites or social media channels.

So if you're already wondering where the "claim 5GB" button is, don't worry — the detailed instructions simply haven't been released yet.

The Communications Ministry Will Publish an FAQ

The Communications Ministry is also expected to publish a dedicated frequently asked questions section covering the initiative.

That should hopefully clarify some of the obvious questions customers are likely to have.

For example, users will probably want to know whether the offer applies to every active Malaysian mobile line, whether there is a minimum account age, whether multiple SIM cards belonging to the same individual qualify separately and exactly how long each 5GB allocation can be used.

There may also be questions surrounding mobile virtual network operators and other services operating on top of the major telecommunications networks.

Until the official FAQ and telco-specific terms are published, however, it would be better not to assume how those situations will be handled.

The main thing confirmed so far is that eligible Malaysians using participating prepaid or postpaid services are set to receive a total of 10GB.

Why Free Data Makes Sense as a National Celebration Benefit

Giving Malaysians additional mobile data may seem relatively simple compared with more traditional National Day promotions, but connectivity has become an increasingly important part of everyday life.

Mobile internet is no longer used only for browsing websites or checking social media.

People depend on it for online banking, e-wallet payments, navigation, communication, food delivery, streaming, ride-hailing, business applications and even accessing government services.

That makes data one of the more universally useful digital benefits the government and telecommunications providers can offer.

It also fits naturally with major national celebrations.

National Day and Malaysia Day typically generate considerable online activity as Malaysians share photographs, videos, livestreams and celebratory messages. Providing additional mobile data gives users a little more freedom to participate without immediately eating into their regular monthly quota.

Prepaid Users Could Benefit Particularly From the Extra Quota

Although both prepaid and postpaid customers are included, the offer could be especially useful for prepaid users.

Many prepaid plans provide relatively limited high-speed data allowances, particularly at lower price points.

An additional 5GB could represent a meaningful portion of someone's normal monthly allocation.

For postpaid customers with very large or unlimited data plans, the practical benefit may be less noticeable, although the exact usefulness will depend on how each telecommunications company implements the promotion.

Some operators may also structure the free allocation differently depending on their existing plans.

Again, this is why the upcoming telco announcements will be important.

The Initiative Is Part of a Much Larger HKHM 2026 Effort

The free mobile data initiative was announced during the National Day and Malaysia Day 2026 Celebration Sponsorship Contribution Presentation Ceremony, where the government also revealed the scale of sponsorship supporting this year's festivities.

According to figures presented at the event, confirmed sponsorship contributions have reached approximately RM48.63 million.

Of that amount, around RM2.7 million is in cash contributions, while approximately RM45.93 million comes in the form of goods and services.

That represents a substantial increase compared with the previous year.

Last year's sponsorship value stood at around RM22.3 million, meaning the 2026 figure represents an increase of approximately 118%.

That is more than double the previous amount and indicates considerably stronger participation from corporate and industry partners in this year's celebrations.

Where Is All That Sponsorship Going?

Fahmi also provided an indication of how the overall sponsorship value is being distributed.

Approximately 50% of the contribution value is allocated toward promotional activities surrounding the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.

Another 30% consists of goods intended for visitors, while the remaining 20% supports the committees involved in organising HKHM 2026.

This means much of the sponsorship isn't simply being deposited as cash.

Instead, companies are contributing services, promotional support, products and other resources that reduce the amount organisers would otherwise need to procure separately.

The telecommunications industry's free data contribution fits neatly into that broader model.

Rather than simply handing over funding, telcos are providing something directly connected to their own services that can potentially benefit millions of Malaysians.

A Collaborative Effort Between Government and the Telecom Industry

The involvement of all five major telecommunications providers also makes the initiative noteworthy.

Having Maxis, CelcomDigi, TM, U Mobile and YES participating means the promotion isn't being restricted to customers of a single operator.

That greatly expands its potential reach.

Malaysia's telecommunications market is spread across several networks, and limiting a national promotion to only one or two providers would inevitably exclude a large portion of the population.

Coordinating the initiative across the major operators therefore makes considerably more sense for something intended to accompany nationwide celebrations.

It also demonstrates how telecommunications infrastructure can be incorporated into public initiatives without requiring users to subscribe to a completely new service.

Don't Rush to Redeem Anything Just Yet

Because the detailed redemption procedures haven't been announced, Malaysians should also be cautious about promotional messages appearing before the official telco announcements.

Whenever a large-scale free-data campaign is announced, it doesn't take long before questionable links and fake redemption pages begin circulating through WhatsApp, SMS or social media.

There should be no reason to provide sensitive banking details, passwords or unusual personal information simply to receive a legitimate mobile data allocation.

Once redemption officially begins, it would be safest to follow instructions provided through your telco's official app, website, verified social media channel or customer notification system.

If you see a random link promising "10GB Merdeka free data" before your operator has announced anything, it is probably worth being cautious.

What Malaysians Should Watch for Next

The announcement itself is only the first stage.

The most important information now will come directly from the participating telecommunications companies.

Customers should keep an eye out for details covering the redemption process, eligibility, activation date and validity period.

It will also be interesting to see whether the data is automatically credited or requires manual redemption.

Hopefully, the process is kept simple.

For a nationwide initiative designed to celebrate National Day and Malaysia Day, requiring customers to jump through multiple registration steps would somewhat defeat the purpose.

Final Thoughts

The promise of 10GB of free mobile data across National Day and Malaysia Day 2026 is a simple but useful addition to this year's celebrations.

Splitting the allocation into 5GB on 31 August and another 5GB on 16 September also gives Malaysians something to look forward to on both occasions rather than treating them as a single promotion.

The collaboration between the Communications Ministry and Malaysia's major telcos should also mean that a broad range of prepaid and postpaid customers can participate.

For now, though, there is one important thing to remember: the free data has been announced, but the exact redemption method and validity conditions haven't been detailed yet.

So there is no need to start hunting around for redemption links just yet. The next step is simply to wait for Maxis, CelcomDigi, TM, U Mobile and YES to publish their respective instructions ahead of the celebrations.
