After years of anticipation, Spotify is officially bringing lossless audio to its platform—and the best part is that it won't require a new or more expensive subscription tier. Instead, all existing Spotify Premium subscribers will gain access to this upgrade as part of their current plan.
How to Access Lossless on Spotify
Subscribers will receive an in-app notification once the feature becomes available to them. To turn it on, users simply need to head into the settings menu under "media quality" and enable the lossless option.
One important detail: lossless audio must be activated per device, not globally across your account. Spotify is starting support with popular hardware brands including Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser, with Sonos and Amazon devices expected to join the list next month. To make things clearer, an indicator will show up on the Now Playing bar and Connect Picker whenever a track is streaming in lossless quality.
Audio Quality and Comparisons
Spotify's implementation of lossless is capped at 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC. While this is a significant improvement over its standard compressed audio, it still trails behind competitors like Apple Music and Tidal, both of which currently offer up to 24-bit/192kHz playback.
This limitation has sparked speculation that Spotify might eventually revisit its shelved Spotify HiFi plan—originally teased back in 2021—as a potential higher-priced tier for true audiophiles.
Global Rollout and Availability
The rollout is happening gradually across more than 50 countries throughout October. Some regions already enjoying lossless streaming include Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
For millions of Premium users, this long-awaited feature is a step closer to high-fidelity listening, without the added cost.
