If you've been renewing your driving license or planning to drive overseas, here's some good news. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has just unveiled a brand-new design for the Malaysian Driving License (LLM), and it's not just a pretty facelift — it's also packed with advanced security upgrades.
A More Secure License, One Step at a Time
Launched on 21 May, the new driving license is being rolled out in phases, with priority given to specific groups first. For now, only two categories of people are eligible for the physical version of the new license:
According to JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, the transition is being handled carefully to avoid overwhelming the system. Selected JPJ branches are now issuing the upgraded card — but don't expect it to be available everywhere just yet.
Going Digital — With Exceptions
For most Malaysians, especially those renewing domestically, the license will now be issued in digital form through the MyJPJ app. It's part of JPJ's push toward digitalisation, aligning with broader government efforts to reduce paper and physical issuance.
However, there's a catch — not every country accepts digital driving licenses. "While Singapore accepts it, many others still require a physical copy," said Ramli. That's why travellers are encouraged to bring a printed license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) when heading abroad. Both can be arranged via JPJ before you leave the country.
Stronger, Smarter, and Stylish
Security is a top priority in the new design. The card has been engineered to resist tampering and forgery — a step up in ensuring only genuine license holders are on the road. Better yet, it's built to last up to 10 years, which means fewer replacements and fewer trips to the JPJ counter.
And yes, it looks good too. The front of the card proudly features the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad building, layered over abstract wave motifs. Flip it over, and you'll find the Istana Negara set against floral-inspired designs — a nod to Malaysia's heritage and modernity all in one.
In Summary
This latest move by JPJ is a step forward in balancing convenience, international requirements, and modern security standards. Whether you're renewing soon or planning a trip overseas, keep an eye on the evolving rollout — and don't forget to download the MyJPJ app if you haven't already.
