For EV drivers, public charging is usually straightforward, but it can still involve several small steps: opening an app, finding the correct charger, starting a session, confirming payment and waiting for charging to begin.
Gentari is aiming to remove much of that friction with its latest Gentari Go update. The company has now opened its AutoCharge feature to all Gentari Go users, allowing compatible registered vehicles to begin charging automatically at supported Gentari DC chargers after a one-time enrolment process. The feature was previously limited to users on Gentari Go subscription passes.
Plug In and Let the System Handle the Rest
AutoCharge is designed to make public EV charging feel closer to using a familiar petrol station experience: arrive, connect the charger and let the system take care of authentication in the background.
Once a user links their Gentari Go account, payment method and compatible vehicle during setup, the charging session can begin automatically when that same vehicle is plugged into a supported DC charger. There is no need to scan a QR code, tap an RFID card or manually start the session through the app each time.
This may sound like a small improvement, but it addresses one of the most common frustrations around EV ownership: charging should ideally be simple, predictable and fast, especially during long-distance travel or when drivers are stopping briefly between appointments.
The app still remains useful for checking charging progress, viewing sessions and managing payments, but it no longer has to be the first thing a driver reaches for when arriving at an eligible charger.
Availability Is Broader, but Not Universal Yet
The feature may now be available to all Gentari Go users, but that does not mean every charger and every EV can use it immediately.
AutoCharge currently works only at selected Gentari DC charging locations, with Gentari saying support will continue to expand across its network, particularly along major travel routes and in urban areas. Gentari has indicated that more than 100 of its DC charging locations currently support AutoCharge, while its wider charging footprint includes more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia.
Vehicle compatibility is another important factor. Not every EV or plug-in hybrid can communicate with a charger in the way AutoCharge requires. Drivers should therefore check the latest compatibility list and supported charging locations in the Gentari Go app or through Gentari's official information before expecting the feature to work at every stop.
That limitation is not unique to Gentari. AutoCharge systems generally depend on compatible vehicle-to-charger communication, so the experience can vary depending on the car model, connector setup and charger hardware.
A Small RM10 Incentive for Early Users
To encourage users to try the new feature, Gentari is offering RM10 in Gentari Go credits to the first 500 users who enrol successfully and complete their first AutoCharge charging session.
The credit is not the main reason to use AutoCharge, but it is a useful nudge for drivers who may be curious but have not yet taken the time to complete the initial setup.
More importantly, Gentari says there are no extra fees attached to using AutoCharge itself. Standard charging rates, existing subscription plans and applicable promotions continue as usual.
Rewards Are Becoming More Time-Sensitive
The update also brings changes that Gentari Go users should pay close attention to, particularly around Go Points.
Points earned before 30 June 2026 will remain valid until 31 December 2026. However, points earned from 1 July 2026 onwards will now expire after 180 days from the date they are received.
This makes the rewards system more time-sensitive than before. Users who collect points gradually and save them for later may need to review their balance more often, especially if they regularly earn points through charging or other Gentari Go activities.
The app update also reportedly changes the redemption value for charging discounts, with some rewards now requiring more points than before. That means users should check the current rewards catalogue rather than assuming past redemption rates still apply.
Mobile Verification Adds an Extra Security Step
Gentari Go users who want to use Gentari Go Credits as a payment method must now verify their mobile number. Gentari says this is intended to provide an additional layer of protection for its built-in wallet, while users who prefer other payment methods can continue using them without completing the verification step.
It is a reasonable change. As EV apps increasingly handle account balances, stored payment methods and charging histories, stronger account verification becomes more important. Convenience should not come at the cost of making it easier for someone else to access or misuse an account.
Final Thoughts
Gentari Go's wider AutoCharge rollout is a practical step forward for Malaysia's growing EV ecosystem. It does not solve every public-charging concern, especially while compatibility and supported locations remain limited, but it helps make the best-case charging experience much smoother.
For drivers with a compatible vehicle and access to an eligible DC charger, the idea is simple: set it up once, plug in later and spend less time dealing with apps, cards and manual confirmations. As more chargers and EVs support this kind of automatic authentication, that convenience could gradually become the standard rather than a premium feature.
