Roblox has started rolling out its new age-based account system globally, and Malaysia is among the countries included in the update. The change introduces two new account types for younger users, along with tighter chat rules, stronger content controls, and more tools for parents to manage their children's activity on the platform.
Although Roblox is primarily known as a gaming and creation platform, the update comes at a time when many countries are paying closer attention to how young users interact online. In Malaysia, this also arrives alongside wider conversations around social media access and online safety for users under 16.
For Roblox, the goal is clear: younger players should have a more age-appropriate experience, while parents should have better visibility and control over what their children can access.
A New Age-Based Account System
Roblox first announced its plan for the new account structure back in April. The company described it as a more unified approach to child safety, combining age checks, content ratings, communication settings, moderation, and parental controls into one framework.
Under the new system, users are automatically placed into different account types based on their age.
Children aged five to eight will be placed under Roblox Kids accounts. Users aged nine to 15 will be moved into Roblox Select accounts. Those aged 16 and above will continue using standard Roblox accounts, but certain features may still require age verification.
This means Roblox is no longer treating younger users as one broad group. Instead, it is separating children and teenagers into different levels of access, depending on their age and maturity level.
What Roblox Kids Accounts Can Access
Roblox Kids accounts are meant for the youngest players, specifically those aged five to eight. These accounts come with the strictest protections.
Users under this category can only access experiences with Minimal or Mild content ratings, and those experiences must also pass Roblox's expanded review process. This extra screening is meant to ensure that games available to younger children are suitable not only by rating, but also by overall content and design.
Communication features are disabled by default for Roblox Kids accounts. Depending on the region, parents may be able to manage some communication settings through linked parental accounts, but the default approach is clearly more restrictive.
This is important because Roblox is not just a game library. It is also a social platform where players can chat, join experiences together, and interact with user-generated content. For very young users, limiting those interactions reduces the chances of exposure to inappropriate conversations or risky social features.
Roblox Select Accounts For Users Aged Nine To 15
For older children and teenagers, Roblox is introducing Select accounts. These apply to users aged nine to 15 and provide broader access compared to Roblox Kids accounts.
Select users can access experiences rated up to Moderate, provided those games meet Roblox's additional screening requirements. This gives them more variety while still keeping them away from content that may be unsuitable for their age group.
Communication options are also more flexible for Select accounts, but they are still not completely open by default. Access depends on several factors, including the user's exact age, region, and whether they have completed the required verification steps.
Roblox says users will automatically move from Kids to Select accounts when they turn nine. Once they reach 16, they will transition to a standard Roblox account.
Chat Access Now Depends On Age Verification
One of the biggest changes in this rollout involves chat. Roblox now requires users to complete age verification before they can access chat features. Without age verification, users will not be able to use chat, regardless of how old they claim to be.
For Roblox Kids accounts, chat remains disabled by default. Parents can continue managing communication settings through linked accounts until the child turns 16.
This is part of Roblox's wider effort to improve safety around online interactions. The company has been expanding its age-verification tools, including facial age estimation and other verification methods, to better determine whether users are accessing features suitable for their age.
The shift is significant because chat has always been one of the most sensitive areas for platforms with younger audiences. By tying chat access to verification, Roblox is trying to reduce the risk of users misrepresenting their age to access features meant for older players.
More Restrictions For Under-16 Users
Beyond chat, Roblox is also adding stricter content limits for users under 16. Experiences available to Kids and Select accounts must go through additional reviews beyond the platform's standard moderation process.
Developers will also need to meet new eligibility requirements before their games can appear in these age-based catalogues. This means the responsibility does not fall only on users and parents. Creators also need to ensure their experiences are suitable for the younger audience categories they want to reach.
Some features will be completely unavailable to both Kids and Select accounts. These include social hangout-style experiences, free-form drawing tools, experiences that discuss sensitive issues, one-to-one in-game chat, and Roblox Moments, which allows users to share gameplay clips.
Roblox is also tightening how social media links work on the platform. Going forward, these links can only be shared or viewed by users aged 16 and above who have completed age verification. This rule applies across several areas, including user profiles, game pages, Community spaces, and Creator Hub pages.
Stronger Parental Controls
Alongside the new account categories, Roblox is expanding its parental control tools. Parents who link their account to their child's account can manage several important settings from one place.
This includes setting screen-time limits, creating spending caps, reviewing friend lists, managing Trusted Friends requests, and approving or blocking specific games.
These tools are useful because online safety is not only about blocking harmful content. It is also about helping parents understand how much time their children are spending on the platform, who they are interacting with, and whether they are making purchases.
As children get older, some controls will gradually shift toward them. However, parents will still retain visibility over key information such as screen time, friend lists, and spending activity.
A Safer But More Controlled Roblox Experience
The rollout of Roblox Kids and Select accounts marks a major change in how the platform handles younger users. Instead of relying only on general content moderation, Roblox is building a more structured system around age, verification, communication, and parental oversight.
For younger players, this should create a safer and more age-appropriate experience. For parents, it gives more control and visibility. For developers, it introduces clearer expectations around what kind of content can be made available to children and teens.
Of course, the exact settings, available features, and content access may differ depending on the user's country or region. Still, the direction is clear: Roblox is becoming more restrictive for younger users, especially when it comes to chat, social features, and access to certain types of experiences.
As more governments and platforms rethink how children should interact online, Roblox's new account system shows how gaming platforms are also being pulled into the broader conversation about digital safety, age verification, and parental control.
