WhatsApp Developing New Media Hub Feature For iOS

WhatsApp appears to be working on bringing its Media Hub feature to iOS, expanding a tool that was first introduced on the Mac app and web version in November last year. The feature is designed to give users one central location for viewing shared photos, videos, links and documents without having to open individual conversations.

If the iOS version follows the same general concept, it could make managing shared content considerably easier for people who regularly exchange large numbers of files through WhatsApp. Instead of remembering which conversation contained a particular image or document, users would be able to browse shared content directly from within the app's settings.

A Central Place For Shared Media

The Media Hub brings together content received across multiple WhatsApp conversations into a single interface. This includes conventional media such as photos and videos, but it also extends to links and documents that have been shared through the platform.

That makes the feature more useful than the existing media section inside individual chats. Users would no longer need to manually open one conversation after another when trying to locate an older file.

For anyone who uses WhatsApp heavily for work, family groups or sharing documents, having one searchable location could save a considerable amount of time.

Search By Sender, Caption Or URL

One of the more useful aspects of the Media Hub is its search capability. Users will reportedly be able to search for content according to the sender or caption associated with a particular item.

Links can also be located by searching their URLs, making it easier to retrieve websites that may have been shared weeks or months earlier. This is particularly useful when users remember part of a web address but cannot recall which conversation originally contained the link.

The feature should therefore function as more than a simple gallery, providing a broader content-management layer across WhatsApp.

Media Can Be Sorted By Date Or File Size

WhatsApp also appears to be adding sorting controls to help users organise larger collections of shared content. Items can be arranged according to date or file size, which could make it easier to locate recent media or identify unusually large files.

Sorting by file size could also help users manage storage more effectively. Large videos and documents can consume significant space over time, especially in active group conversations where media is shared continuously.

Being able to identify and remove unnecessary large files from one central screen could make storage management much less frustrating.

Multiple Items Can Be Forwarded Or Deleted Together

The Media Hub is expected to support selecting multiple items at once. Users could then forward or delete several pieces of content without needing to manage them individually.

This should be particularly useful when cleaning up storage or sharing groups of photos and documents with another contact. Instead of repeating the same action for every file, users could perform the task in one batch.

That kind of bulk management is something WhatsApp has gradually improved over time, and bringing it into a central media interface makes the feature considerably more practical.

Reactions And Starred Media Are Also Included

WhatsApp is reportedly planning several interaction options directly within the Media Hub. Users will be able to react to media, star important items or jump directly into the original conversation where a particular file was shared.

A dedicated heart icon will also allow users to find media connected to messages they have previously reacted to. This could provide a quick way of rediscovering favourite images, videos or other content without searching through long conversation histories.

These small additions could make the Media Hub feel more like a proper media library rather than simply another file browser.

iOS Version May Only Show Received Media

Interestingly, the iOS implementation may differ from what WhatsApp already provides on Mac. The Media Hub on iPhone reportedly includes a dedicated section for received media, but content sent by the user may not appear.

That means photos, videos or files that you personally sent in conversations could be absent from the centralised view. If the behaviour remains unchanged before launch, this may become one of the feature's more frustrating limitations.

A complete media archive would arguably be more useful if it included both incoming and outgoing content. Since the feature is still under development, however, WhatsApp could still change this behaviour before public release.

New And All Media Tabs Provide Different Views

When entering the Media Hub, users will reportedly be able to move between separate views depending on what they are looking for. The New tab focuses on recently received media, providing quick access to fresh content without requiring users to browse through their entire history.

The All media tab provides a more comprehensive collection of available content. This should be useful when looking for older photos, videos or links that may have been received some time ago.

Separating recently received files from the complete media library could make the interface easier to navigate, especially for users with years of WhatsApp history.

Photos, Videos And Links Can Be Filtered

Additional filters allow users to narrow the Media Hub according to content type. Photos, videos and links can be viewed separately, reducing clutter when searching for a particular type of item.

Users can also switch between grid and list views depending on their preference. Grid view should work particularly well for visually browsing photographs and videos, while list view may make more sense for documents or links where filenames and other details are more important.

Offering different views gives users more control over how they manage large collections of shared media.

Disappearing Messages Will Remain Excluded

Content shared through disappearing messages will not appear inside the Media Hub. This makes sense given that the purpose of disappearing messages is to prevent certain conversations and media from remaining permanently available.

Including disappearing content inside a central archive would undermine that privacy behaviour. WhatsApp therefore appears to be keeping temporary messages separate from the new feature entirely.

Users should not expect the Media Hub to become a way of recovering media that has already disappeared from a conversation.

The Feature Could Make WhatsApp Much Easier To Manage

WhatsApp has evolved far beyond a simple messaging application. Many people now use it to exchange work documents, travel information, photographs, receipts, web links and countless other pieces of content.

The problem is that locating those items later can become difficult because everything is organised around individual conversations. A central media interface solves much of that problem by treating shared content as its own searchable library.

For users with dozens of active chats, this could become one of WhatsApp's more genuinely useful organisational improvements.

Storage Management Could Become Simpler Too

The Media Hub could also complement WhatsApp's existing storage-management tools. Sorting content by file size and selecting multiple items for deletion makes it easier to identify media that is consuming unnecessary space.

Videos are usually the biggest offenders, particularly when they are repeatedly forwarded through group chats. Over several years, these files can quietly occupy gigabytes of storage.

Giving users a visual way to review shared media across all conversations could make routine cleanup much faster.

The Feature Is Still Under Development

Despite appearing relatively advanced, the Media Hub for iOS is still being developed and is not yet available to everyone. WhatsApp has not announced a public release date, and there is no guarantee that every feature currently being tested will appear in the final version.

Development-stage features can change significantly before release. Interface elements may be redesigned, limitations could be removed and additional capabilities may be added based on testing.

This means the decision to exclude sent media, for example, could still be reconsidered before the feature reaches ordinary users.

Final Thoughts

WhatsApp's upcoming Media Hub could make finding and managing shared content on iPhone considerably easier. Instead of searching through individual conversations, users would have one place to browse photos, videos, links and documents received across the platform.

Features such as sender and caption search, URL lookup, date and file-size sorting, batch deletion and forwarding, starred items and reaction-based filtering should make the hub much more useful than a basic gallery. The separate New and All media views, combined with content filters and grid or list layouts, should also help users navigate large media collections.

The biggest limitation currently appears to be the decision to display only received media while excluding content sent by the user. Hopefully, that is something WhatsApp revisits before launch.

Since the feature remains under development, there is no confirmed release date yet. But if the final version retains most of the functionality currently being tested, the Media Hub could become one of the more practical WhatsApp improvements for users with large conversation histories.
