For years, Malaysian Shopee users who rely heavily on TNG eWallet have had one fairly obvious frustration: despite Touch 'n Go being one of the country's most widely used digital wallets, there hasn't been a straightforward way to use it when checking out on Shopee.
That has finally changed — sort of.
Shopee Malaysia has quietly introduced DuitNow QR as a payment option, which means purchases can now be paid using TNG eWallet. The important distinction is that Shopee still doesn't directly list TNG eWallet as a supported wallet.
Instead, TNG eWallet works because it can scan and pay DuitNow QR codes.
So yes, you can finally use your TNG balance to buy something on Shopee, but the implementation is a little more roundabout than simply selecting "Touch 'n Go eWallet" at checkout.
TNG eWallet Still Isn't Technically a Direct Shopee Payment Method
This is where things become slightly confusing.
Shopee's payment information still lists wallets such as Touch 'n Go eWallet and Boost as unsupported direct payment methods.
That hasn't necessarily changed.
What has changed is the introduction of DuitNow QR, which acts as an interoperable payment layer.
Instead of Shopee needing to integrate every Malaysian e-wallet individually, it can generate a standard DuitNow QR code. Any compatible banking app or e-wallet can then process that QR payment.
TNG eWallet happens to support DuitNow QR, which effectively gives users an indirect route into Shopee checkout.
In practice, most users probably won't care about that technical distinction.
If the money leaves your TNG eWallet and the Shopee order gets paid, it works.
But it does explain why you won't necessarily see a big "TNG eWallet" button appearing alongside ShopeePay or credit cards.
How to Pay for Shopee Using TNG eWallet
The process is fairly straightforward once you know where to look.
When checking out on Shopee, choose DuitNow QR from the available payment methods.
Shopee will generate a QR code for the transaction.
If you're using Shopee on a computer or another device, simply open TNG eWallet on your phone and scan the QR code.
If you're doing everything on the same smartphone, you can save or open the QR image and use TNG eWallet's Universal Scan functionality to process it.
Once scanned, TNG eWallet should show the amount being charged together with Shopee Marketplace as the merchant.
Check that the details are correct, approve the payment and Shopee should receive confirmation.
It adds an extra step compared with a fully integrated wallet payment, but it's still much more convenient than transferring money elsewhere first.
Why DuitNow QR Is Actually the More Interesting Part
The bigger story may not really be TNG eWallet at all.
It's DuitNow QR.
Malaysia's national QR payment framework was designed to make different banks and payment providers interoperable.
Instead of merchants displaying separate QR codes for every bank or wallet, a single DuitNow QR code can be processed through participating financial applications.
We're already accustomed to seeing this in restaurants, shops and cafés.
Bringing the same concept into e-commerce checkout makes a lot of sense.
It potentially means Shopee doesn't have to individually build and maintain payment integrations for every compatible e-wallet.
Likewise, users aren't locked into whichever wallet an online platform happens to favour.
That could become particularly useful as DuitNow adoption continues expanding.
It Also Gives TNG eWallet Users Another Way to Spend Their Balance
TNG eWallet has become much more than a toll-payment wallet over the years.
Many Malaysians now use it for retail payments, food, transport, bills and DuitNow transfers.
Shopee was one of the more obvious gaps.
Previously, users with substantial balances sitting inside TNG eWallet might need to move money through another payment channel before buying something on Shopee.
The new DuitNow QR option removes much of that inconvenience.
That might be especially useful for users who receive refunds, rewards, allowances or other funds directly into TNG eWallet and prefer keeping their everyday spending inside the same ecosystem.
There Could Be Cashback Through TNG Shop & Earn
There is another potential benefit beyond simply being able to pay.
TNG eWallet users may also qualify for cashback through the wallet's Shop & Earn programme.
Eligible Shopee purchases currently offer 1% cashback, with a maximum cashback of RM6.67 per order.
There is an important condition, though.
You generally need to enter Shopee through the Shop & Earn section within TNG eWallet before completing your transaction.
Simply opening Shopee normally and paying through DuitNow QR doesn't necessarily mean cashback will automatically apply.
The Shop & Earn system relies on tracking the purchase journey so TNG Digital can determine that the transaction originated through its programme.
Cashback Isn't Instant
If your purchase qualifies, don't expect the cashback to appear immediately.
Transactions are generally tracked within around two days, with confirmation potentially taking up to 14 days.
This delay is common among affiliate-style cashback programmes because the platform needs to confirm that the transaction wasn't cancelled, refunded or otherwise made ineligible.
For larger purchases, the 1% rate may sound attractive, although the RM6.67 maximum means the benefit stops increasing once the qualifying purchase reaches a certain value.
It's more of a small bonus than a reason to choose one payment method over another.
Not Every Shopee Purchase Qualifies for Cashback
The list of exclusions is also fairly extensive.
TNG Digital says certain types of purchases won't qualify under the Shop & Earn arrangement.
These include categories such as digital products, telecommunications payments, utilities, vouchers, travel-related purchases, donations, cinema and event transactions, local services, investment products and ShopeePay Near Me transactions.
There are also restrictions surrounding certain Shopee LIVE purchases and products sold at special streaming prices.
Promo codes and vouchers can complicate things as well.
If a promotional code or voucher isn't specifically recognised through the Shop & Earn platform, using it may result in the transaction becoming ineligible for cashback.
Shipping charges, service fees, taxes and other non-product costs are also excluded from cashback calculations.
So while Shop & Earn can provide a little additional value, it's worth reading the eligibility rules before assuming every Shopee order will return 1%.
Why Doesn't Shopee Just Integrate TNG eWallet Directly?
That is probably the question many users will ask.
From a customer perspective, directly selecting TNG eWallet at checkout would certainly be simpler.
But payment integrations involve more than placing another logo on the screen.
Each payment provider may involve separate APIs, settlement arrangements, transaction rules, refund handling, reconciliation systems and contractual agreements.
Supporting DuitNow QR gives Shopee a more universal route.
One payment standard can potentially work across numerous participating banking and wallet applications.
From a technical and operational perspective, that can be considerably simpler than maintaining separate integrations for every provider.
The trade-off is that users may need one or two extra taps during checkout.
Shopee Already Has Plenty of Other Payment Options
Shopee Malaysia already supports a fairly broad selection of ways to pay.
The most obvious is its own ShopeePay, which is deeply integrated into the platform.
Users can also pay through credit and debit cards, online banking, Google Pay and Apple Pay, depending on their device and account.
Cash-based options haven't disappeared either.
Certain orders support cash-on-delivery, while some payment arrangements allow customers to pay through participating physical locations.
For users who prefer financing purchases rather than paying the full amount immediately, Shopee also supports instalment arrangements through qualifying credit cards.
Then there is SPayLater, Shopee's own buy-now-pay-later service for eligible users.
Online Banking Remains One of the Most Universal Choices
Malaysian users can also pay directly through supported banks.
These include major institutions such as Maybank, CIMB, RHB, Public Bank, Hong Leong Bank, HSBC, Bank Islam, Bank Rakyat, OCBC and UOB, among others.
Online banking remains particularly useful for shoppers who don't want to keep balances inside separate e-wallets.
That said, DuitNow QR increasingly blurs the distinction between banking apps and e-wallets.
A QR payment can often be handled from whichever compatible financial app you already use.
That's arguably where Malaysia's payment ecosystem is heading.
DuitNow Could Reduce the Need for Wallet-Specific Checkout Buttons
There's a broader implication here.
For years, online checkout pages have accumulated payment logos.
One service supports Wallet A, another supports Wallet B, while a third supports completely different providers.
National interoperable payment standards can simplify that.
If an e-commerce platform accepts DuitNow QR, then users can potentially choose from multiple compatible apps themselves.
The merchant doesn't necessarily need to care which particular wallet or bank ultimately funded the transaction.
It is conceptually similar to what happened with payment card networks.
Merchants don't need completely separate checkout systems for every bank that issues a Visa or Mastercard.
A common payment infrastructure handles much of the interoperability.
DuitNow QR could increasingly serve a similar role for Malaysian digital payments.
TNG eWallet Users Finally Have the Option They've Been Waiting For
Even if the implementation isn't quite as elegant as some users might have hoped, the practical result is still positive.
TNG eWallet users can finally use their wallet balance when shopping on Shopee.
There is no need to wait for a dedicated Touch 'n Go integration.
Choose DuitNow QR, scan it through TNG eWallet and complete the payment.
For people who regularly use both services, that's already a meaningful improvement.
Be Careful With Cashback Expectations
The Shop & Earn integration makes the new option even more interesting, but users shouldn't confuse the two features.
Paying with TNG eWallet through DuitNow QR and earning TNG cashback are separate things.
The payment may work perfectly even if your purchase doesn't qualify for Shop & Earn.
To maximise the chance of receiving cashback, you need to begin your shopping journey from TNG eWallet's Shop & Earn section and ensure the products, vouchers and transaction conditions meet the programme's requirements.
Otherwise, treat the ability to pay using your TNG balance as the primary benefit and any cashback as a bonus.
Final Thoughts
Shopee Malaysia's addition of DuitNow QR may look like a relatively small checkout update, but for TNG eWallet users it solves a long-standing limitation.
It isn't a direct TNG integration, and Shopee technically still doesn't list Touch 'n Go as one of its native e-wallet payment options.
But practically speaking, that distinction matters much less now.
If TNG eWallet can scan the DuitNow QR and complete the transaction, users finally have the functionality they wanted.
More importantly, this demonstrates why payment interoperability matters.
Instead of waiting for every online merchant to separately support every bank and digital wallet in Malaysia, DuitNow QR provides a common layer connecting them.
So yes, paying for Shopee purchases using TNG eWallet now involves a slightly unusual route.
But once you've done it once, it's actually pretty straightforward — and hopefully a sign that Malaysian online payments are gradually becoming a little less fragmented.
