BUDI95 Rollout Coming Soon - The BUDI95 fuel subsidy, which sets petrol prices at RM1.99 per litre, is officially launching on 30 September 2025. To ensure that only eligible Malaysians benefit, verification will primarily be done through MyKad. But there's good news for tech-savvy drivers—Petronas has confirmed that its Setel app can also be used for this process.
How Setel Makes Verification Easier
In its latest announcement, Petronas shared that customers who use Setel to pay for fuel will not need to go through manual MyKad checks at the counter. Instead, once you complete the verification inside the app, you're all set for future transactions.
The process uses e-KYC (electronic Know-Your-Customer) technology, similar to what you'd see with e-wallets or digital banks. To complete it, users simply upload pictures of their MyKad (front and back), take a quick selfie, and fill in some basic details. It only needs to be done once, after which the app will recognise you automatically.
Avoid the Last-Minute Rush
With the nationwide rollout just around the corner, officials are advising motorists to complete their Setel verification early. Doing so can help avoid long queues and congestion at petrol stations when the subsidy officially kicks in.
Quotas and Exemptions
As announced earlier, every Malaysian will be entitled to the subsidy regardless of income level. However, the allocation is capped at 300 litres per month. For e-hailing drivers, special exemptions will apply, and the Finance Ministry is expected to share more details soon on how these drivers can apply for additional quotas.
Other Pump-Side Options
Petronas isn't the only one rolling out digital convenience. Shell Malaysia's managing director, Shairan Huzani Husain, recently demonstrated how motorists can also complete MyKad verification directly at the pump. Early feedback suggests the process is quick and hassle-free, giving drivers more flexibility depending on where they choose to fill up.
