Start Collecting Your E-Invoices Now For Future Tax Relief Claims

Malaysia's e-invoice system is starting to move beyond business compliance and into something that may directly affect everyday taxpayers. If you normally claim tax relief for items such as lifestyle purchases, smartphones, computers, insurance, childcare fees or other eligible personal expenses, it may be time to start paying closer attention to your receipts and e-invoices.

The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, or LHDN, is now encouraging individual taxpayers to request e-invoices for expenses that may be related to personal tax relief. This is not just about keeping digital records for convenience. It is also part of a wider move towards using e-invoice transaction data to support future income tax filing, particularly for the Year of Assessment 2026. LHDN has stated that this approach is intended to support a pilot project where selected tax relief information may eventually be pre-filled into the Income Tax Return Form based on e-invoice data.

Why E-Invoices Matter For Individual Taxpayers

For many Malaysians, tax filing season usually means digging through receipts, screenshots, payment confirmations and old emails just to confirm what can be claimed. Some receipts fade, some are misplaced, and some online purchase records become difficult to track after a year. E-invoices could help reduce that headache because the transaction record is stored digitally and can be reviewed later through the MyInvois Portal.

This is especially useful for expenses that commonly fall under individual tax relief categories. For example, purchases of personal computers, smartphones, lifestyle-related items, insurance payments, childcare centre fees and other eligible relief categories may be easier to verify if they are supported by proper e-invoice records. Instead of manually collecting everything at the last minute, taxpayers can start building a cleaner digital trail throughout the year.

What Buyers Need To Do

To request an e-invoice, buyers will need to provide the required identification details to the seller. This may include an identification number or Tax Identification Number, commonly known as TIN, so the seller can issue the e-invoice correctly.

This part is important because an e-invoice is not useful if the details are inaccurate. If the name, identification number or tax information does not match properly, it may create unnecessary issues later when taxpayers want to review or use the transaction record for tax purposes. In simple terms, the e-invoice should clearly show that the purchase belongs to the correct taxpayer.

A Step Towards Pre-Filled Tax Relief Information

The bigger picture here is automation. LHDN appears to be moving towards a system where some tax relief information can be automatically reflected in the tax return form, based on verified e-invoice data. This does not necessarily mean taxpayers can stop checking their claims altogether, but it may make the process smoother and reduce manual entry.

If this pilot project works well, tax filing could become more convenient in the future. Instead of relying entirely on manual declarations, some eligible expenses may already appear in the system for taxpayers to review. This can help reduce mistakes, improve documentation and make the overall filing process more transparent.

Better Record Keeping For Tax Season

One of the biggest benefits of e-invoices is record management. Many taxpayers only start looking for receipts when the tax filing deadline is getting close. By then, some documents may already be missing, damaged or difficult to retrieve.

With e-invoices, the record is digital from the beginning. Taxpayers can review their transactions through the MyInvois Portal, making it easier to check what they have spent and whether the transaction may relate to a tax relief claim. This does not remove the need to understand tax relief rules, but it does make supporting documents easier to manage.

What This Means For Everyday Malaysians

For regular taxpayers, the message is simple: start requesting e-invoices for purchases that may be relevant to tax relief. This is especially worth doing for bigger-ticket items or recurring payments, such as devices, insurance, education-related expenses, childcare payments and other eligible lifestyle claims.

It is also a good habit to ask sellers whether they can issue an e-invoice before making a purchase, especially for items you may want to claim later. Over time, this could become part of normal consumer behaviour, just like asking for a receipt used to be.

Getting Help From LHDN

Taxpayers who need help with e-invoices can contact LHDN through its offices, the e-Invoice help desk at 03-8682 8000, MyInvois Live Chat, or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. These channels are useful for anyone who is unsure about how to request an e-invoice, what information is required, or how the MyInvois Portal works.

Final Thoughts

The shift towards e-invoices may feel like another administrative change at first, but for individual taxpayers, it could become a useful tool for tax relief claims. Instead of treating e-invoices as something only businesses need to worry about, Malaysians should start seeing them as part of personal tax record keeping as well.

By requesting e-invoices early and consistently, taxpayers can avoid the usual year-end scramble for receipts and supporting documents. More importantly, it prepares them for a future where tax filing may become more digital, more automated and hopefully less stressful.
