Google Play Store to Flag Battery-Draining Apps Starting 2026

Battery life has always been one of the top frustrations for smartphone users. Even as phone makers pack larger batteries into their devices, some apps remain notorious for draining power faster than users can charge it. To tackle this long-standing issue, Google is taking a firm stance—by visibly labeling apps that excessively consume battery power.

Warning Labels Coming to the Play Store

Beginning 1 March 2026, users browsing the Google Play Store will start seeing battery drain warning labels on certain apps. These warnings will alert users when an app is known to cause heavy background battery usage. The goal is simple: improve transparency and help users make informed choices before downloading or updating an app.

This move is part of Google's ongoing effort to balance performance, user experience, and energy efficiency within the Android ecosystem. The new labeling system aims to motivate developers to optimize their apps while empowering users to avoid "power-hungry" applications.

How Google Identifies Energy-Hungry Apps

Earlier in the year, Google partnered with Samsung to introduce an "excessive partial wake lock" metric—a technical measure used to track how often apps prevent a device from entering sleep mode. When an app keeps the phone awake unnecessarily, it continues drawing power even when it's not actively being used.

With this new metric, Google has defined a "bad behavior threshold." If an app keeps a device awake for over two hours within a 24-hour period during a user session, it's considered excessive. And if 5% of user sessions in a 28-day cycle exceed that limit, the app officially crosses the threshold.

Consequences for Developers

Once flagged, Google will notify developers about their app's battery behavior, giving them a chance to optimize it. However, persistent offenders won't just get a warning—they could also face reduced visibility on the Play Store, including removal from recommended app lists.

This step signals a broader shift in Google's strategy: promoting app efficiency and sustainability as part of its long-term Android roadmap. By surfacing this information upfront, the Play Store is moving toward becoming not just a marketplace, but a more responsible ecosystem where both developers and users are accountable for device performance.
