Samsung Introduces the 990 SSD in Malaysia, Starting at RM1,069

Samsung is expanding its consumer storage lineup with the launch of the new Samsung 990 SSD, a mainstream PCIe 4.0 drive designed for users who want fast storage without stepping up to the more premium 990 Pro series.

Although the name may sound familiar, the 990 SSD is positioned differently from Samsung's flagship 990 Pro. It is intended to offer strong everyday performance for gaming systems, content-creation workstations, PC upgrades and custom-built computers while remaining more accessible to general users.

A Mainstream Alternative to the 990 Pro

The Samsung 990 SSD can be viewed as the standard version of the company's established 990 Pro lineup. It retains the PCIe 4.0 interface and delivers performance that approaches the upper limits of what PCIe 4.0 storage can offer.

Samsung says the drive is aimed at a broad range of users, including gamers, creative professionals and people working with demanding applications or large files.

Tommy Hyoungsuk Kwon, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Memory Brand Product Business Team, described the new SSD as a storage expansion option for heavy workloads, immersive gaming, high-resolution content creation and DIY PC systems.

This positioning suggests that Samsung is not targeting only performance enthusiasts. The company is also looking at users who simply need a fast and dependable storage upgrade for modern applications.

Built Around PCIe 4.0 and Samsung's Latest NAND

The Samsung 990 SSD uses the PCIe 4.0 interface, making it compatible with a wide range of current desktop computers, laptops and gaming systems that support M.2 NVMe storage.

It also incorporates Samsung's latest NAND technology. While Samsung has not positioned this model as a direct replacement for the 990 Pro, the use of newer NAND should help provide a good balance between speed, efficiency and long-term reliability.

The drive will initially be available in two capacities:

These sizes cover many common upgrade scenarios. The 1TB model should be suitable for users expanding a laptop or installing a primary operating-system drive, while the 2TB model offers more room for modern games, video projects, virtual machines and large media libraries.

Performance Approaches the Limits of PCIe 4.0

Sequential performance differs slightly between the two capacities.

The 1TB Samsung 990 SSD is rated for sequential read speeds of up to 7.15GB/s, while the 2TB version can reach up to 7.25GB/s. Both models provide sequential write speeds of up to 6.45GB/s.

Although the 2TB model is marginally faster, the difference in sequential read speed is unlikely to be noticeable during ordinary use. Both versions should provide quick system boot times, faster game loading and smooth transfers of large files.

Random performance shows a more noticeable difference between the two models.

The 1TB version delivers up to:

The 2TB model increases this to:

Random performance is particularly important when a drive is handling many smaller files or multiple operations simultaneously. This can affect application responsiveness, operating-system performance, game asset loading and professional workloads that involve large collections of project files.

What the Performance Means in Everyday Use

Headline storage speeds do not always translate directly into dramatic improvements in every task. However, a drive operating at this level should still provide a noticeably responsive experience when compared with older PCIe 3.0 NVMe drives or conventional SATA SSDs.

Users may see improvements when:

For users building a new PCIe 4.0 system, the Samsung 990 SSD could also serve as a high-speed primary drive without requiring the additional cost of a premium Pro model.

Malaysia Pricing and Availability

Samsung plans to release the 990 SSD in Malaysia toward the end of July 2026.

The local recommended retail prices are:

The pricing places the drive in the higher end of the mainstream NVMe market, particularly when compared with increasingly affordable PCIe 4.0 alternatives from competing brands.

Samsung will likely rely on its established reputation in the SSD market, strong performance figures and integrated storage software to justify the premium.

Final Thoughts

The Samsung 990 SSD appears to be aimed at users who want near-flagship PCIe 4.0 performance but do not necessarily require everything offered by the 990 Pro.

Its fast sequential speeds, improved random performance and availability in practical 1TB and 2TB capacities make it suitable for gaming, creative work and demanding everyday computing.

However, Malaysian buyers may still want to compare its launch price with the 990 Pro and other high-performance PCIe 4.0 drives. Depending on future discounts, the price difference between the standard and Pro models could play a major role in determining which Samsung SSD offers the better overall value.
