Many taxpayers in Malaysia look forward to tax season not only as a time to fulfil their obligations, but also with the hope of receiving a tax refund. For the 2025 assessment year, the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia has announced that eligible taxpayers will begin receiving their refunds starting from the second week of March 2026. The payments will be credited in stages as the processing of submitted tax returns is completed.

If you tried logging into MyTax and felt like you were stuck in an endless loading loop, you are not imagining it. LHDN has acknowledged there is a technical disruption affecting the MyTax portal, and they've said their team is working to restore services.

If you're filing taxes in 2026, you're basically doing a "tidy up" of everything you earned and spent in Year of Assessment (YA) 2025. And yes, it always feels a bit like digging through drawers for receipts you swore you kept nicely in a folder.

Once 1 March 2026 arrives, tax season officially begins again in Malaysia. This is when you can start submitting your income tax return and claiming the reliefs you qualify for. If you have been keeping receipts and statements throughout the year, this part becomes much easier. If you have not, it is still manageable, but you will want to get organised quickly so you do not miss out on legitimate claims.

Malaysia's move toward e-Invoice isn't just about modernising paperwork. Six months into the rollout, the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) says it's already turning e-Invoice data into something very real: better visibility, better matching, and better tax compliance outcomes.
