Meta Platforms is preparing to launch a paid subscription service for its AI-powered chatbot, Meta AI, similar to offerings from OpenAI and Microsoft, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Subscription Model Set for Testing in Q2
The testing phase is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2025, though revenue from the subscription service may not be significant until at least next year.
Meta AI, which debuted in September 2023, functions as a virtual assistant powered by large language models, enabling it to perform advanced reasoning and conversational tasks. When asked for comments, Meta declined to provide details about the upcoming service.
Meta's AI Expansion Strategy
The move is part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's strategy to strengthen the company's position against AI rivals such as Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google. In January 2025, Zuckerberg announced plans to invest up to USD 65 billion (RM290.17 billion) in AI infrastructure this year.
Meta has also been working on AI-powered humanoid robots within its Reality Labs division, an initiative aimed at integrating AI into robotics for real-world applications.
Standalone Meta AI App Coming Soon
In addition to the subscription service, Meta is reportedly set to launch a standalone Meta AI app in the second quarter, joining Facebook and Instagram as part of its growing AI ecosystem.
The AI Investment Race Intensifies
Major tech companies continue to invest billions in AI infrastructure, following the global success of ChatGPT.
With AI-driven innovation heating up, Meta's move into AI subscriptions signals its ambition to compete in the evolving chatbot and AI assistant market.
