Instagram is making a quiet but meaningful change to its messaging experience. After 8 May 2026, the platform will no longer support end-to-end encrypted direct messages, bringing an end to a feature that was introduced as part of Meta's broader push toward private communication.

Meta is tightening its safety controls for young users in Malaysia, and the timing is not accidental. As the country moves closer to stricter social media rules for children and teenagers, the company is putting more attention on how younger users interact with Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Through its Teen Accounts system, Meta says it is building in stronger protections by default rather than expecting teens or parents to configure everything manually.

Over the past few days, many Instagram users have been caught off guard by unexpected emails urging them to reset their passwords. For some, the messages arrived repeatedly, even though they never initiated any account recovery. With a nationwide ban on users under 16 set to take effect on 10 December 2025, Meta has kicked off a sweeping cleanup across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads—removing accounts belonging to younger teens before the law officially lands.
