WhatsApp could be preparing a major change to the way users store their chat backups. For years, WhatsApp has depended on external cloud services such as Google Drive on Android and iCloud on iPhone. This has worked well enough for many people, but it has also created a few familiar problems, especially as chat histories become larger over time.
WhatsApp is preparing to drop support for older Android smartphones, with the change set to take effect on 8 September 2026. Once this happens, devices running Android 5.0 and 5.1 will no longer be able to access the app, effectively cutting off users who are still relying on these ageing versions.
It looks like WhatsApp is quietly testing something it has been hinting at for a while — a premium subscription tier. Referred to as "WhatsApp Plus" in early reports, this new offering isn't a complete overhaul of the app, but rather a layer of optional upgrades aimed at users who want more customization and control.
WhatsApp has now officially expanded its CarPlay support with a native app experience, giving iPhone users a much more practical way to access messaging and calling features from their car dashboard. What was previously limited to beta users is now becoming available more broadly through the latest iOS version of the app, making the experience feel more complete than the older Siri-dependent setup.
WhatsApp has been steadily evolving beyond just messaging, and its Channels feature is one of the clearest signs of that shift. What started as a broadcast-style tool for updates is now inching toward something more creator-focused — and potentially more commercial.
