When Final Fantasy VIII launched on the original PlayStation in 1999, it immediately stood apart from everything that came before it. Rather than simply building on the success of Final Fantasy VII, Square chose to take creative risks — introducing a more realistic visual style, an unconventional progression system, and a deeply emotional story focused on memory, identity, and human connection. The result was a JRPG that divided opinion at launch, but grew into one of the most discussed and re-evaluated entries in the series.
