If you're a Malaysian who frequently travels or passes through immigration checkpoints, there's an important digital change coming your way. Starting January 15, MyDigital ID will become the only login method for Malaysians using the MyNIISe mobile application, marking another step in the country's push toward streamlined digital public services.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Home Ministry to modernise how Malaysians interact with immigration systems—making the process more secure, simpler, and less fragmented.
What's Changing for Malaysians
From January 15 onward, Malaysians will no longer be able to log in to MyNIISe using multiple or legacy credentials. Instead, access will be tied exclusively to MyDigital ID, which acts as a single sign-on identity.
The idea is straightforward: one verified digital identity, one login, and fewer passwords to remember. Once authenticated, users can access MyNIISe without juggling different accounts or worrying about inconsistent login systems.
It's worth noting that this change applies only to Malaysians. Foreign travellers will continue using the existing login method on MyNIISe, with no changes to their access flow.
Why MyDigital ID Matters
According to the Home Ministry, MyDigital ID is designed to verify identities directly against the National Registration Department's database. Importantly, this verification happens without storing users' personal data within the app itself.
This approach offers two key benefits. First, it significantly improves security by ensuring identities are accurately verified at the source. Second, it reduces data exposure risks, since sensitive personal information isn't duplicated or stored unnecessarily.
From a user perspective, it also improves convenience. A single, trusted login means less friction and a smoother experience when dealing with immigration-related processes.
What You Need to Do Before Using MyNIISe
If you're a Malaysian aged 18 and above and haven't already registered for MyDigital ID, now is the time to do it. The Home Ministry is encouraging users to download and set up the MyDigital ID app before attempting to access MyNIISe after January 15.
The MyDigital ID app is available across major platforms, including Apple App Store, Google Play, and Huawei AppGallery. Registration only needs to be done once, after which it can be used across supported government digital services.
MyNIISe's Gradual Nationwide Rollout
MyNIISe itself is still being rolled out in stages. The app was first introduced on September 22 last year at major Johor checkpoints, including the Sultan Iskandar Building and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Bahru.
Expansion plans are already underway. The system will be progressively deployed at major entry points such as Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminals 1 and 2, as well as airports in Bayan Lepas, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu.
Adoption so far has been encouraging. As of December 30, MyNIISe recorded close to 600,000 downloads, with more than 287,000 registered users—numbers that are expected to rise as the app becomes available at more locations.
Part of a Bigger Digital Government Vision
The Home Ministry describes this integration of MyDigital ID into MyNIISe as part of the Madani government's wider commitment to people-centric digitalisation. The goal is not just automation, but building trust—ensuring that digital services are secure, efficient, and genuinely easier for the public to use.
For travellers, this means fewer hurdles at immigration touchpoints. For the government, it means a more reliable and unified identity system. And for Malaysia's digital ecosystem as a whole, it's another signal that single sign-on identity platforms are becoming the backbone of future public services.
As January 15 approaches, one thing is clear: MyDigital ID is no longer optional for Malaysians using MyNIISe—it's becoming the new normal.
