By the early 90s, Tetris had already become a global phenomenon. Nintendo decided to follow up on the success of the original with a new take on the formula: Tetris 2, released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. Instead of simply stacking tetrominoes to clear lines, Tetris 2 introduced fresh puzzle mechanics that combined the addictive speed of Tetris with the strategy of match-three games.
