Introducing the Second Edition of “Online Safety IRL: Scam Edition”

The Ministry of Communications Malaysia (Kementerian Komunikasi) has officially launched the second chapter of its "Online Safety IRL" fellowship programme—this time titled the Scam Edition. The initiative is driven in collaboration with CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi), Meta Platforms, Inc. (Meta) and Ratio:Cause, and media partner Tonton. The focus? Tackling the evolving online-scam threat landscape—especially those scams enhanced by artificial intelligence.

Why Focus on AI-Driven Scams?

Online scams have evolved dramatically in recent years. What used to be simple email hoaxes or fake lottery messages has now turned into complex fraud schemes powered by AI tools. From deepfake voices mimicking loved ones to realistic phishing messages generated by chatbots, scammers are using technology to outsmart even the most cautious internet users.

This year's programme acknowledges that reality. It zeroes in on how AI can be both a tool for safety and a weapon for deception, empowering Malaysians to recognise, report, and resist these sophisticated scams before they cause harm.

From Awareness to Action

The first edition of Online Safety IRL made a strong impact, reaching millions of Malaysians through its digital safety campaigns. Building on that success, the Scam Edition takes things a step further—shifting from simple awareness to active, hands-on advocacy.

A group of 35 young changemakers and content creators has been selected to lead the charge. Together, they are expected to reach over five million people online, spreading vital messages about scam prevention and online safety in relatable, authentic ways. These fellows are not just learners—they're ambassadors for a safer digital Malaysia.

What the Fellowship Offers

The fellowship isn't your average awareness workshop. It's a full-fledged learning and leadership experience that combines digital education, mentorship, and real-world outreach.

Expert-Led Masterclasses

Participants will take part in immersive training sessions with professionals from the tech and communications sectors. Topics include recognising AI-generated scams, understanding online behaviour manipulation, and using content responsibly to influence digital communities.

Mentorship and Community Work

Each fellow will receive mentorship from industry leaders and digital-safety experts. They will also design and carry out community-based projects—organising workshops, producing awareness content, and engaging with schools or local groups to share what they've learned.

Hands-On Content Creation

To make the message stick, fellows will be encouraged to create social-media content, short videos, and campaigns that highlight real-world examples of scams. The goal is to make online safety awareness part of daily digital life, not just a one-time campaign.

Dual Tracks: Creators and Youth Leaders

The programme is split into two main tracks. One focuses on content creators, helping them craft messages that educate and entertain. The other empowers youth leaders to drive community action, ensuring that scam awareness reaches both online audiences and offline spaces.

Meta's "Is This Legit?" Game

Adding a fun and interactive element to the campaign, Meta has launched a browser-based game called "Is This Legit?" The game challenges players to spot common scam tactics—such as suspicious language, fake urgency, or emotional manipulation—using real-world examples. Between exercises, players can enjoy mini-games that reinforce what they've learned. It's even available in Bahasa Malaysia, making it accessible to all Malaysians.

Why This Initiative Matters

Scams are no longer a fringe problem—they affect everyone. As AI tools become more powerful and accessible, scammers can create fake websites, voices, and identities that look alarmingly real. This fellowship addresses that threat by turning awareness into community-driven action.

Here's why it stands out:

Final Thoughts

"Online Safety IRL: Scam Edition" is more than just another awareness campaign—it's a movement to future-proof Malaysians against the next generation of scams. By merging education, mentorship, and digital creativity, the programme nurtures a new generation of online guardians who can think critically, detect deception, and help others do the same.

In an age where AI can blur the line between what's real and what's fake, awareness alone isn't enough. Empowerment is the new defense—and Malaysia is taking that step forward with confidence.
