Malaysia experienced a significant spike in internet traffic throughout 2024, according to new data from the Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX). The country recorded a 17% year-on-year increase, reaching a peak of 2.6 terabits per second (Tbps)—a historic high for MyIX.

Rising Demand Signals a Digital Economy on the Move

The growth has been largely driven by the growing demands of businesses, content providers, and consumers, all of whom are contributing to a more connected and digital-first economy.

MyIX Chairman Chiew Kok Hin emphasized that this milestone reflects the broader trend of digital transformation in the country.

MyIX's Role in Malaysia's Digital Evolution

Founded in 2006 under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), MyIX has played a crucial role in facilitating local internet peering, reducing latency, and ensuring smoother data flow across networks in Malaysia.

Chairman Chiew pointed out that MyIX's performance in 2024 demonstrates its readiness to meet growing connectivity demands and maintain high standards of service amid the evolving digital landscape.

Government Support Fuelling Progress

Chiew also credited the Malaysian government for its forward-thinking digital strategies. He praised the administration's efforts to:

These initiatives have laid the foundation for businesses and citizens to embrace digitalisation seamlessly, he said.

Looking Ahead With digital demand showing no signs of slowing down, Malaysia is expected to continue investing in connectivity and internet infrastructure. MyIX's latest figures serve as a strong indicator that the country is on the right path—transforming into a digitally driven, globally competitive nation.
