NVIDIA: Connector Melting Issues Resolved, RTX 50 Series Deemed Safe

NVIDIA has reassured consumers that the infamous 12VHPWR connector melting issue, which affected the GeForce RTX 4090, will not be a concern for the upcoming RTX 50 Series. According to the company, the problem was limited to the previous generation and won't resurface with the new Blackwell architecture cards. During an Editor's Day Q&A session in South Korea earlier this month, an attendee inquired about the melting connector and whether NVIDIA had addressed the issue. The company confirmed that it has spent the past year refining the power connector design. As highlighted in reviews of the RTX 5090 FE, the card now features an updated and more reliable connector, ensuring improved safety.

The question posed was somewhat unfair. The RTX 5090, under full load, draws up to 575W of power—125W more than the RTX 4090—through a single 12VHPWR cable. NVIDIA identified that the primary cause of the connector melting issue was due to the connector head not being properly seated into the card's port. It's still early days, and while we don't want to tempt fate, here's hoping that NVIDIA's engineers have truly fixed the issue and that the RTX 50 Series won't bring any more horror stories.
