A Local Language Model Gets a Big Upgrade - When YTL first introduced Ilmu 0.1 late last year, it was already a noteworthy milestone — a homegrown large language model (LLM) designed specifically for Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and deeply familiar with Malaysian contexts. This wasn't just another AI tool; it was one that truly "spoke our language" in every sense of the word.

Now, YTL is taking that foundation and turning it into something you can chat with directly: ILMUchat. This chatbot builds on the linguistic and cultural capabilities of Ilmu 0.1, giving Malaysians a more natural and locally relevant AI experience.

Fluent in BM, Dialects, and Our Signature Rojak

One of the most impressive aspects of ILMUchat is its linguistic flexibility. It doesn't just handle standard Bahasa Malaysia — it understands regional dialects like Kelantanese and even our famous rojak mix of Malay and English.

It also has a knack for formal communication. Need to draft an official letter or speech in the prestigious Bahasa Istana? ILMUchat can do that too.

The local context isn't just about language. For example, it can recommend travel itineraries for Malaysian towns or explain legal topics like the rules and prohibitions on firearm ownership in Malaysia — knowledge that shows it's been tuned for more than just grammar.

Starting with Text, Moving to Images and Voice

At launch, ILMUchat will focus on text-based conversations. But YTL has bigger plans — future updates will add image generation and voice-based interactions, opening the door for even richer communication.

The chatbot enters early access on Malaysia Day, 16 September, marking a symbolic debut for a proudly local innovation. Those interested can register at ilmu.ai to request early access. I've already signed up and am waiting for the approval — fingers crossed they let me in soon.

Businesses Are Already On Board

ILMUchat isn't just for casual conversations. Some Malaysian companies have already started integrating ILMU into their services.

In the automotive world, Proton will be adding ILMU integration to its infotainment systems, starting with the new X50. This could mean you'll soon be chatting with your car in fluent BM while navigating city traffic.

I've already gone ahead and registered for early access myself through ilmu.ai, and now it's just a waiting game to see if I get approved. Fingers crossed they give me the green light soon, because I'm genuinely curious to see how ILMUchat handles real-world Malaysian conversations.

Why This Matters

While global AI giants dominate headlines, ILMUchat shows that Malaysia can create its own AI solutions tailored to its culture, language, and needs. By prioritising local dialects and contexts, it ensures users aren't stuck with AI that misunderstands them. For businesses, it's a chance to integrate automation and customer service that actually "gets" Malaysian customers.

If YTL follows through with its vision — expanding into voice, images, and deep integration — ILMUchat could become a true national AI assistant, something we can proudly call our own.
