Apple is finally jumping into the foldable phone game, and if the latest reports are accurate, it's going to look more like a book than a flip phone. Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that the first foldable iPhone is expected to launch in late 2026, reinforcing earlier leaks from The Information. While many expected Apple to take the clamshell route (like Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series), Kuo says the company is opting for a book-style fold, more in line with the Galaxy Z Fold or OPPO's Find N series.

A Big Fold Without the Crease?

According to Kuo, the foldable iPhone will feature a 5.5-inch outer screen and a 7.8-inch OLED internal display. But here's the kicker—Apple is reportedly using an advanced hinge mechanism that could eliminate the crease commonly found on foldable screens. If true, this would be a major win over competitors, as even the best foldables today still struggle with noticeable screen creases.

The hinge and midframe are rumored to be made from stainless steel and titanium, supplied by Bright Laser Technologies (BLT). Apple is also said to be using advanced 3D printing technology to achieve a thinner and lighter profile.

Slim, Sleek, and Missing Face ID?

Apple is going all-in on keeping it slim—when fully unfolded, the device is expected to be just 4.5-4.8mm thick, and around 9-9.5mm when folded. The casing will reportedly be made from titanium, and the phone will sport a dual-lens rear camera setup.

One surprise, though: Face ID might be missing. Kuo suggests that Apple is ditching Face ID to maintain the ultra-thin design, instead bringing back Touch ID on the power button. That would be a pretty unexpected move, considering Apple has relied heavily on Face ID since the iPhone X.

Launch Timeline and Eye-Watering Price Tag

Kuo expects Apple to begin initial production in Q3 2025, ramping up mass production in 2026, with an official launch happening by the end of 2026. But here's where it gets expensive—the foldable iPhone is expected to cost between $2,000 (~RM8,859) and $2,500 (~RM11,074).

Despite the steep price, Apple is aiming to ship 3-5 million units in the first year, with a second-generation version potentially reaching up to 20 million shipments in 2027.

Is a Foldable iPhone Worth the Wait?

Apple might be late to the foldable party, but if it can deliver a crease-free display, a slim and premium design, and Apple-level software optimization, it could shake up the foldable phone market in a big way.

Now the real question is—are people ready to spend two grand on a foldable iPhone? If history is any indication, Apple fans probably will.
