Apple has rolled out the iOS 18.4 developer beta, introducing a range of new features—including the much-anticipated "Priority Notifications". First previewed during WWDC 2024 as part of Apple's AI-powered notification system, this feature will use machine learning to determine which notifications are most important, moving away from the traditional chronological listing.
How Priority Notifications Work
According to 9to5Mac, the feature is disabled by default in the current beta version, meaning users must manually activate it:
Once enabled, high-priority notifications will appear in a dedicated section on the lock screen, while less critical alerts remain accessible by swiping up.
Similar to Apple's Priority Mail System
The Priority Notifications system functions similarly to Apple's Priority Messages in the Mail app, which ensures that time-sensitive emails like appointments and invitations are highlighted first. Over time, AI will analyze your usage patterns to refine which notifications should be prioritized.
What's Missing?
Despite anticipation, the expected Siri AI overhaul is absent from this beta release. Apple has previously indicated that technical hurdles would delay its AI integration, and recent rumors suggest that iOS 18.5 may be the version that finally introduces Siri's upgrade.
For now, Priority Notifications marks another step in Apple's push for AI-driven personalization, helping users cut through the clutter and focus on what truly matters.
